People who put their entire date of birth in their fedi profile confuse me. When I've been locked out of bank accounts before they've given me access with as little as:
- Full Name
- Date of Birth
- Last 4 of my SSN
The way some people, often my fellow queers, give out 8 of the 12 numbers you need to steal someones identity on their public profiles baffles me. The way some content creators have a "don't follow me unless you have your DOB in your bio" is such a cop mentality.
I wont even tell people my exact age, because that could still be 4-6 of the digits.

Community Defense isn't large men with guns patrolling around. It looks much more like information networks so that the undocumented have an early warning about possible raids. It looks like checking in on elderly folks in your neighborhood after a power outage. Organize for things like that, and the other stuff will follow when it's needed.
Talk to your neighbors. Figure out what challenges you all face. Make plans.

I know this might sound rich coming from a known member of a large organization, but you should prioritize building community with your neighbors over joining some big org. An organization can give you the feeling of being larger and stronger than you really are. 8000 people spread out across the country can feel absolutely massive on a discord or forum. But when it comes time to actually do anything, that nonprofit organization which felt so massive and strong only yesterday feels incapable of doing much besides sharing memes and getting into debates on forums.
Whereas 20 people all living in the same small area can be quite effective either in the case of political action, or when the most vulnerable in your neighborhood need defending. Imagine a text group (signal group ideally) where people send things like "ICE vehicles spotted in the neighborhood" or "Lots of cop cars seen on [major street]" or even "They're threatening to tear down Larry's tent, can anyone come by to help?"
It's scary. Start small. Maybe try to exchange numbers with every person with a pride flag or a free Palestine sign in their window near you. Let them know that you're trying to get people in the neighborhood in contact with one another so you can take care of each other. It can spread and grow from there.

Honestly, I think we've hit a point where a computer made a decade ago is performant enough for most people and how they use computers. The high requirements for windows 11 are another example of the industry trying to force everyone to replace every device they own regularly, so that sales can keep up, consequences be damned.
In some ways, the "AI" hype is a tool to sell new hardware as well. Surely you want all the best in your new "AI PC" which is just a normal computer but newer, with some software that will claim to be helpful but will actually be spewing bullshit.

sometimes it amazes me that the paranoid delusions of the past have all become reality and we (society) just kind of... don't care?
the tv is actually tracking you now. there are cameras everywhere that cops can access without a warrant whenever they want. everyone actually carries a location tracking device with them wherever they go.
when my dad said stuff like this in the 90s he was called delusional. now its so common that most people get bored when you talk about it.

I have a small anecdote about the devaluation of CSS and the over valuation of JavaScript. Once long ago I was on a design system team which was closely connected to the design team. The design team unanimously concluded that the tab order needed to go in reverse on two buttons within a modal in the app.
An engineer from a product team took up the task and wrote a complex script to hijack presses of the tab key, and when focus was within a certain container, manually grab tab and change what is focused. It had many bugs. The engineer tossed more JavaScript at it. After three cycles, and a new dependency from NPM, a senior engineer blocked the PR and told the design team that such a thing cannot be done in a stable manner, and this work would not be done.
The design team asked me about it. I said I could do that with one html change and one line of CSS. I switched the order of the buttons in the DOM and set the flex-direction to row-reverse on that container.
No new dependencies, no complex logic, no bugs. Actually understanding and using CSS could reduce the weight of so many pages by literal megabytes, but engineers today see CSS as a problem to solve with JavaScript and not a useful tool.
