What was the first book you read that enormously impacted you?
I'd pretty much grown bored with reading by about the age of twelve. Everything seemed so puerile and small. Then my mum took down dad's collected edition of the Lord of the Rings and handed that to me. With no context or explanation. Anyone else remember this cover?

Relearning guitar is hard! My fingers just want to fly off along all the things I think I can do, but they can't do them, so I'm constantly hauling them back and trying slower, but then my brain freezes because I'm not used to actually thinking about that bit of music. It is getting better, and I'm taking the opportunity to learn the fretboard this time around, which is a great help.

That's the main action sequence written.
My fave thing about this is that I primed the readers with all the information they need to follow it before hand, so even though the characters in the scene are confused, the audience knows exactly what happened and why. But there's still a little twist.
Hard work. Hopefully worth it.

It's interesting. Ursula LeGuin says in the intro to The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas that one doesn't write politics, one simply is political and writes. It'll come out anyway. I get these little bits in my writing that act as unthought condensations of my general reading and understanding of the world. They just come out in the flow of the work.

In my next book, Somebody Keeps Callin', the first paragraph involves the MC waking up next to a headless corpse. That's a major plot point.
My WIP, Desolation - I'm settling on that title for the moment, had the MC reveal that she's trying to break into the library to look at the original files not available on the public screens.
