Was always a PoC and consist performance example. Most relays are single-point failure be it one server or all on Cloudflare (for example). One year ago was handling a lot of all nostr traffic one way or another.

Wasn't so much users are traffic. We had Los Angeles, Montreal, Helsinki, Sydney, Buenos Aires, and Montreal data centers with GeoDNS routing. Each relay synced with the others to have consistent data. While also syncing with about 10 of the other top relays to replicate their data. The current LMDB for strfry is 152GB (will be backing up and pruning soon). Was planning to have a separate "archive" relay for historical data (now on-hold).

I always went into the project with a disdain for paid models. For a while it was break even but with BTC going up the donations went down. If figured out a funding method could easily scale the network back up. I plan to share the Terraform/Ansible and design for anyone wanting to replicate too.

Was costing out of pocket around $1500US a month. Plus relayable was a target of a lot of Chinese and other DDoS attacks. So in addition to cost was time costs juggling it all. I had some family stuff took more of my time as well.

Can use anything like a Raspberry Pi or similar with wifi USB or internal. Could use captive portal to make users aware of what it is or accept terms. Grab a valid Let's Encrypt cert when set up. Then just run strfry/nginx.

Been seeing a lot of BTC related "AI" projects. They read like a shitcoin whitepaper and I have only seen demos using ChatGPT, not actual open source fine-tuned models. Using ChatGPT "fine-tuning" and custom instructions is a shitcoin, backed by WorldCoin.

It's mainly as you put it. I could grab a popular FOSS nostr web client and add malicious code. Then make a .onion of it. Could share to Chinese or other users in their language. Can then have users self-XSS, fingerprinting, Cross-Site Request Forgery, and get MITM off top of my head. Could be spread by impersonation of the client's developer(s).
Depends on a persons level of acceptable risk. If I were a dissident in a hostile country, for example, I would never enable JavaScript. The fire up Tails then install Gossip approach is easiest come up with. Have seen foreign intelligence services make "privacy focused" informational sites with misinformation on how to be anonymous online. (NOT saying OP is one of these to be clear. 😉) All comes down to why someone needs to use Tor. Tor browser calls that setting "Safest" for a reason.

I would not encourage people who need OPSEC to use Primal or any nostr web client since they use JavaScript and can leak information about the users.
