I can't see any English politician making this decision. The "independent" nuclear deterrent has always been militarily useless and offered no threat to aggressors (Falkland War anyone?) while draining vital resources away from actually useful and effective conventional military forces. Eventually England's military capability will be a squaddie with a bent spoon and, stuck in a maintenance yard somewhere, a few submarines armed with missiles going nowhere.

Two questions float to mind:
• Has the Labour leadership been spending too much of the past four years on internecine warfare and is now in panic mode because its homework has to be in this year?
• Are the consultants needing to be brought in because the people who would ordinarily do this work have been so discouraged they've walked away?

I honestly don't understand why the Daily Mail has got into such a bate about this, this is exactly what it campaigned for and that Leave voters voted for. It's like deciding to leave a concert part way through then having a strop because you're asked for your ticket to get back in.

The Bank of England is horizontally laid-back about excessive executive wage rises and bonuses for failure, #greedflation and oligopolistic retail and commodity markets but lies awake at night worrying that workers' pay rises may be above zero.

Scorching and salting the earth after spending thirteen and more years ransacking the country. A rational mind would see this as a policy of making it as difficult as possible for whoever is to follow but I have a nagging feeling that they're just doing it because they can.

The other problem is the tendency to bundle packages together into one contract "to make it more efficient," so that instead of going out for tender on X it's out on X+Y+Z which tends to favour corporates that have spent the past couple of decades hoovering up a variety of SMEs.

They also overlook the fact that 30p Lee could only have prospered in the first place if the New Model Conservative Party was already #TheNastyParty. If it wasn't he'd just be some voice shouting in a pub car park after dark.

And the major inefficiencies inflicted by the cuts go unheralded. After the cuts in the early 90s the organisation I worked for spent 4 manager hours per day shuffling rotas, ringing round and cajoling for cover for the day's gaps in provision and planned staff holidays and 4 or 5 staff hours per day being cajoled and shipping out to cover service points at short notice.
