My @npub1yud…a0zl buddy @npub12zl…q88u hoooed me up with this amazing Charizard ex premium collection box! 🥳 This was the first time someone has bought Pokémon cards for me (I’ve only ever bought them myself) and it was a *delight*! 😍
The box contains an epic Charizard card, as well as its evolutions (Charmander and Charmelion), cool sleeves, and a neat display stand. And six packs of cards, too! I also found some great stuff in the packs, like a golden Nest Ball card! 🎉

Limiting individual instances one by one *reactively* doesn’t feel like the right way to handle this, so I’m going to look at options for preventing DMs from new users or some other way to mitigate this annoyance.

Another day, another influx of spam! This time they’ve moved onto mastodon.world, so we’ve temporarily limited that instance. Hopefully we’ll see some better tools/protocols to prevent these kinds of annoying DM-based spam attacks sooner than later on Mastodon.

As for the CSS, the very quick/rough template stuff that is generated for new weblogs does include style stuff in the templates themselves, but you don’t have to operate that way! You can create a single CSS file and use the HTML <link> element to pull it on from all templates. That same blog post linked above talks about how to create files in weblog.lol. Let me know if you need any help!

@npub1mmt…szvq It’s nothing special! I’ve been toying with the idea of “URL as sentence” or “URL as statuslog entry”... and with a clever Icelandic domain name, the social.lol API, and a tiny bit of scripting, I whipped this up: https://adam.newbold.is/making-a-little-thing-for-statuslogging
It fetches my latest statuslog entry, renders it in glorious minimalist text, and even redirects to a URL that fulfills the “URL as sentence” concept.

@npub1mmt…szvq I’m also going to add a caption field that’s distinct from the description field. Description will wind up being the alt text for the image, and caption will be what’s shown on the image page. I do feel pretty strongly about making sure that the pics that appear on the landing page all have alt text, so I do really want to encourage people to add a description when uploading, though it’s not required to perform the upload. Does that make sense? I’m open to feedback on any/all of this!

@npub1mmt…szvq Good question — the current implementation isn’t stellar (but I’m going to get it there, promise!) but the intent is for it to be a photo sharing service (while also serving as a way to load media that you want to use on other parts of omg.lol). I’m going to add an actual per-pic “visibility" toggle (and address-level default preference) so we’re not relying on the presence of a description as the sole trigger for whether a pic is public or not.

I poked around and found a bunch of forum posts going back as far as 2011 with people complaining about comic sans not rendering, and a reddit post from just 8 days ago with someone saying that "this is still an issue in 2023". I'd love to know the full story behind the phenomenon!

@npub18du…tx7r From what I recall, it had to do with the CSS that some email services (like Microsoft) uses when people choose Comic Sans. It’s something like “font-family: Comic Sans, cursive”, which defines a generic cursive fallback (presumably because someone decided that comic sans was closer to cursive text than serif?) and so any device that can’t/won’t render Comic Sans will switch to the fallback.

@npub18du…tx7r @npub13d2…lvlm There’s a decent chance that you’re seeing a font substitution for Comic Sans (on iOS devices in particular, Comic Sans will often be rendered in a particularly cursive/flouncy typeface). They’re not going for cursive; they’re just trying to use Comic Sans. 😆

There’s also GitHub Pages, of course. But if you’d rather not use GitHub (as I’m feeling more and more lately myself), I might be cooking up a new thing that will make simple web hosting *super* easy… 😄
