Yeah I know its crazy but literally merely having an interest in electronics and computers means you are already on the road to your ham license. You learn all kinds of awesome things (that silly calculation above as an example- yet mind blowing), for a lay person like myself (not an RF Engineer/embedded), I learned the building blocks of our wireless world
Lay flat spiral bound ARRL technical manual. Buy one today!
At worst a good reference manual to learn what the rules are before you break them and are hunted down by elderly volunteer ham radio spectrum monitors with directional antennas. FCC doesn't hunt for people anymore mostly.
You can make cool PCB antennas for Wi-Fi and all kinds of crazy shit. Go get em!
In summation, I'm a far more effective Internet troll then I would have been were I not a ham.

Elderly residents scream " my scanner doesn't work anymore!!!! " But yeah as public safety switches over from analog radio to digital modulation schemes (and then encrypts ) the many small communities (and large cities) are finding their residents are upset because their radio scanners no longer work. I read an article recently about a recent switch that NYPD did to encrypted coms and people were extremely upset.

Sadly encryption is not allowed on American amateur radio bands.
However, in the ISM band (around 900MHz in USA) you can use this allocation of unlicensed spectrum, with almost anything you'd like.
Checkout LoRaWAN and TTN (The Things Network) for a good example of this modulation scheme over ~ 900MHz in USA (other countries use 433MHz and other frequency allocations for ISM).
I recommend getting a license even though it's an auto-dox, as your license is tied to your name and address in an open publicly searchable index....thanks FCC...
The process of studying for your license teaches you so much about RF and electronics; want to cypherpunk? Want to go independent of filthy cellphone radios (yes they are radios!) Start here. It really is eye opening. Get the technician lay-flst spiral bound ARRL book and a free app to study.
You can also apply for itinerant frequency allocation and use encryption there (commercial not amateur). Good luck!

Wish that one company wasn't purchasing all these great open source privacy projects like simplelogin and standard notes however Proton has a stated commitment to privacy and security open source.
Still, yeah, all the eggs in one basket doesn't make me feel great. I guess over time all of these awesome open source projects that are aligned in principle will conglomerate together unfortunately.

Good for you, i used Mac for a long time, then I had to use Windows for work which extinguished all joy... Then finally, I jumped into Linux full time and I've been so happy ever since. Sometimes I have to use Windows so I run that in a VM, but with enough RAM the world is your oyster. I am just a vanilla Debian user, and it's great. I've been enjoying KDE vs GNOME quite a bit. Welcome and enjoy!

Mmmmmm FLdigi! I was wondering when I'd start to see people sending e cash into the audio or radio waves. I was thinking about laser modems as well actually which might be fun too.
How much data is a single aCash Cashu token? So many lovely modulation schemes to encode the token into. Particularly in unlicenced spectrum.
Or maybe sending the audio of a QR code via SSTV to a phone that has an app that demodulates the audio signal into the QR code.

New cars are absolute privacy nightmares; from the APLR (automated license plate readers) to microphones throughout the interior (in some cases interior-facing cameras), Bluetooth broadcasting sensors, wifi, cellular connections with obligatory GPS location, driver usage information (ie hard breaking, speeding, etc), and so on, recording of interior conversations, retention of this personal data (regardless of your consent), insurance companies raising your rates based upon data you truly cannot opt out of, it's wildly depressing. There are new articles seeming almost every day.
I don't think you can even disable the cellular/wifi/Bluetooth or it will brick the car due to necessary firmware updates etc.
There was a "lovely" article about boarder surveillance in Texas leveraging APLR/Bluetooth/WiFi tracking of cars from the other day.

Today's PSA: any cellphone in the US can call 911 in case of emergencies without a sim/esim, and without a carrier. Basically the cell modem will check for the best RSSI (or insert other fancy acronym here) tower connection and then use that carrier regardless of what service (or no service) you have.
So even if your phone is telling you there is no service, you have service...for calling 911 mostly.
RE GrapheneOS however, I'm not sure if when you deactivate your cell modem if that deactivates this feature? (Anyone know? #GrapheneOS kids?)
Also, re 911, you usually can text 911 as well. Please don't test this though...just mentioning this because the article linked references emergency calls. Not sure if that was the author's intention...if not, please ignore this lengthy spam post, I am a botnet.
