Amazing story in the FT which says so much about the UK right now. People able to spend six figures on a car. Police given up on car crime. Insurance costs escalating. Manufacturers offering (subsidised) insurance cover to shore up sales. The company grumbling and calling for more public money be diverted to this rather niche crime which affects relatively few.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 I thought a little better of Johnson after reading it. Perhaps I'm naive. The actual arrangement feels weird. But he has largely respected his son's wishes on not being a public figure. And the comments in that piece around George Floyd at least show some awareness of privilege. Obviously viewed as a whole he's still terrible.

@npub1xl5…wsca I think most 'civilians' like me see through this given we can't pour water the same way into a v60 two times running. And can't taste the difference anyway!
Some of this probably reflects the relationship between many men and gear. You can see the same in hi-fi and discussion of the different properties of speaker cables. People want to persuade themselves they can discern the differences.

@npub1xl5…wsca A lot of these videos are just about the practicalities of the gear, and I'm fine with that. Seeing coffee kev remove the lower burr of the SGP has lots of value for me and isn't in the manual!
I think a bigger problem is that the newbie like me lacks a benchmark to know what good tastes like in the eyes of the experts. I know what tastes good to me. But I have little idea if JH would screw up his face when presented with it.
