Quick question for #archaea folks - have you ever seen Halobacterial culture bottles produce extremely hard, round, dark-brown crystals within the liquid media at some point? I'm thinking some mineral slipped through in the media making, but am curious.

Question for #julialang folks - how do you feel about its JSON parsing capability? I'm handing a moderately sized (25MB) json file, and it looks like parsed output from its JSON module is just way, wayyy off compared to what I get from python import JSON or even jq util in shell.

Assembling this linear chromosome is really kicking my behind. Working with long-long reads, I'm pretty sure the darn thing is series of 2x/3x/4x copies of operons held together by repeat sequences.

Another used bookstore find. Reminded me of when I first read E. O. Wilson's Consilience so many years ago. Considering where Gould stand on the spectrum, this ought to be an interesting read.

Reading through an interesting thread on latest conda shenanigans.
Conda TOS changed last year, and they're blocking IPs from larger nonprofit organizations (such as universities) with more than 200 connections/downloads. Connections will remain blocked until targeted organizations pay up.

Just curious - is there a technical reason why #guix might not work as a container in something like #distrobox, or has it simply not been done before? (Or maybe it's such a trivial thing that no one's writing about it?)

@npub1hxf…g8qu yeah in the US these are mostly nonprofit organizations, and seems to often ask for scientists and researchers on volunteer basis. Very strange and likely unsustainable.

I'm on bunch of citsci type mailing lists, and wow only jobs I've seen posted there for the last few of years were for directors and managers. Don't they also need at least an occasional researcher or two?

@npub16uk…pv7k I've been asking myself the same question - looking for something for lab members note keeping & comm, but reeeally want to avoid the slack trap.
We just need something that can do tag searches, open source, and data backup/downloadable when needed.
Do you have any recommendations?

@npub1efv…4jx2 this is a great thread and introducing more automation for these tasks is fantastic. However - as someone in the blue-collar demographic, I'd argue increasing lack of communication & education contributes to the decreasing labor pool.
If you stop any random person in 20~30's in Queens making less than 30K a year and told them about these infrastructure jobs, most would have never heard of it before.
