They want a war? What do you call a full year of Hezbollah firing rockets at Israeli civilians? That's not a war? Israel has been at war with Hezbollah for decades, and in a hot war with them for a whole year now. Are you not aware of anything that happened before this week?

Apparently your definition of a war crimes is "anything Israel does". Hezbollah has been indiscriminately attacking Israeli civilians for the past year, which actually IS a war crime. Anyone who had one of these pagers was part of Hezbollah's military command structure. They are legitimate military targets. Military communications networks like this are also legitimate military targets. It's not a war crime just because you hate Israel. You need more than that.

Remember when automatic trading algorithms shut down the stock market, or when energy traders shut down the California grid? Those were not related to AI, but probably the kind of systemic risks they are worried about more than the Terminator plotline.

I was there when it collapsed at the beginning of the century. It didn't matter for several years if the tech companies were profitable and then all of a sudden it did and everything fell apart. We all got tossed on our asses. Most of us ended up working for "brick and mortar" companies where things like web commerce, data warehousing, and customer analysis (and all the process knowledge around those things) came in-house because that expertise was suddenly on the market.

Collapse in our future? It already happened. We have walled gardens, rejection of open protocols, devices glued shut, subscription models, top-down infrastructure everywhere, cars programmed to cheat on emissions inspections, TVs that track your viewing, we don't own our music, and the ugliest fucking rolling stainless steel dumpster ever built is hailed as a tech wonder. The collapse came not with a bang, but a whimper, and you are living in the post-apocalypse world.

Many of us in the US have trouble with these things as well. I hope it's "most" and not just "many" but we'll see. Please know that many of us are fighting, not just rationalizing, and we share your fears of where this could lead. But i can't offer you any guarantees that we'll win.
