It's wild, and I say this as a citizen born and raised in the US (though one who's lived most of his adult life elsewhere), that so much of the chatter pre- and post-Biden dropping out has been about how last minute this all is. For #TuneTuesday this week, we're posting #TheOpener: the first song we remember hearing live. Mine is the Screaming Trees, "Nearly Lost You." The Trees opened the MTV Alternative Nation Tour at the Marcus Amphitheater at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI in July 1993. They were followed, in very obviously decreasing order of quality by Soul Asylum and headliners (ugh) the Spin Doctors. I quickly graduated from stadium rock to underground shows. But I still love this song.

Historians point out that it was only in the 1930s that Canada became predominantly urban. What we don't underline nearly as much, is that by 1960 the majority Canada's urban population actually lived in suburbs. Due to a whole set of factors, not least of which is our shared disdain for suburbia, we have whole bodies of literature on single cities and next to nothing on the suburbs. How can we understand 20th-c history while ignoring the places so many people lived?

If the institution were serious (what's more academic than a footnote!), it'd welcome this sort of thing, even if the corresponding text would be fairly long (in addition to the date, it'd have to explain that this wasn't really the university at all, but the founding college that would later be subsumed...).

My university is only a few years out from its 200th anniversary*. Between now and then, I suppose I should try to publish the research I've been doing in my "downtime" on the history of some of its shady land deals, eh?
*The 200th anniversary of its charter (an old date! Just what the marketing people like to celebrate). The institution didn't actually enrol its first university-level student for another 15 years (1842).
