The people who were replying to him, defending the broken screen reader, were saying blind people don't matter because "they account for a small percentage of people". Like, these people don't believe in or understand civil rights. And I'm aware screen reader users don't account for all of accessibility. I'm a digital accessibility specialist. Now you're 'splaining me.

I'm really fucking sick of people identifying a specific accessibility bug in the software/interface/whatever of someone who says they care about accessibility and inclusion and leveraging that into: "this person is literally made of LIES. It's so DELICIOUSLY IRONIC that they are not the perfect bastions of accessibility at all times, even WHEN ASLEEP!"
It only ever happens when said person calls someone out for not caring about accessibility *at all* and it's transparent as fuck.

Absolutely, I've seen that too. It's willful misappropriation of terminology. "Virtue signalling" is used almost exclusively by fascism-adjacent asshats. "Having virtues is bad" is such a ridiculous stance. But the term originally meant to appeal to normative virtues within a group. Technically, fascists being all faschy in front of other fascists is virtue signalling.
Sorry, just interested in etymology. Thank you for speaking out about that stuff.

I think Angular users may even be worse than React users, on the whole, for using the wrong markup for stuff. Looking at a page with background images on `<div>`s instead of, well, images and a form made out of `<li>` and `<a>` elements with button roles instead of checkboxes and radios. Oh and not even in a `<form>` element, just a `<div>`.

The perennial question is, "should designers learn to code?" I think a better question is, "why are we taking design away from those who did learn to code?" Why are we imprisoning them in Jira where they're doomed to fix all the tiny problems designers who can't code--and coders who can't design--should never have been put in a position to make?

Recently, I've taken on design work that lets me work in code. One involved the ""redesign"" of a website. Being in this position allows me to improve the performance and accessibility of a website to an extent that is completely out of reach of a developer, who inherits *prior art*. And this is despite the fact that performance and accessibility are seen as responsibilities of *developers*.

Most of the time, I get hired to fix things as a consultant developer that would not be broken if they had been designed more thoughtfully in the first place. Sound familiar? But here's the thing: I'm not a developer. I studied art and design at university, including how to design websites. But they didn't teach me how to code, even though that's most of the work. So, in early employment, I had to ""steal company time"" to learn how to do that and be better at my job, as a designer.
