OpenZFS is great and it comes with awesome features. But for newbies or even users who don’t use all the features every day, it can be sometimes a little bit overwhelming.
The FreeBSD foundation has generously created an OpenZFS cheat cheat covering all the basic stuff that is important in daily use.
Great work and worth sharing!

@nprofile…m8mr It’s a shame. But for me GrapheneOS is the only OS I would trust on smartphone. And everyone who has been diving a little deeper into the topic should know that there are no real other options that can be compared regarding privacy and security.

@nprofile…sr9k I also thought about sharing my thoughts on a blog. Currently I’m doing this in some way here on mastodon, but this is more volatile, since my posts will disappear after four weeks. And it feels more like interaction than writing articles. So maybe I should start writing a blog.
Btw. I like the approach of Gyptazys’s manpageblog, but I am not sure if a blog in manpage format appeals to people. Many people are attracted by images, even if they’re just stock photos. Manpage format could be a bit too nerdy. But he’ll, it’s so cool 😎

Some time ago I wrote about using Helix editor on FreeBSD. I liked the „batteries included“ approach and I was curious to see whether Helix could be an actual replacement for Neovim.
I really tried and I forced myself to like Helix. And yes, Helix’s approach might be perfect for newbies who have never worked before with vim. But at some point I found myself on a customer’s server, desperately pressing ‚d‘ and wondering why it didn’t delete the character under my cursor. At this point I decided to dump Helix. The fact that some commands are slightly different, but not completely, made it hard for me to switch between systems and made me look like a complete idiot when editing a config while sharing the screen with a client.
BTW is there meanwhile an option to run lua-language-server on FreeBSD? I am using kickstart with nvim and it’s complaining that it can’t install the lsp because it’s not supported on this platform.

@nprofile…sr9k This is something I hear very often when talking about (Free)BSD to others. They are interested, say it sounds really good, but then they don’t know how to use it in production.
Had a conversation with someone a few months ago and he told me: Yes, BSD is interesting, I once installed it, but then I didn’t know what to do with it. For him it seemed to be an issue that it doesn’t come with a desktop environment like Ubuntu or one of the other mainstream Linux distributions.

Is there any other way to keep a FreeBSD workstation free from Poettering-software than building your own packages? Stuff like Pulseaudio seems to find always it’s way to sneak on my computer. So I went to build my own packages with Poudriere. This works well, but is also quite time consuming. Would appreciate any suggestions.

@nprofile…sr9k From my experience most customers would keep using the old server, waiting until it’s 98 % full and performance is affected and then calling for immediate intervention because they cannot work anymore.

@nprofile…x759 Not sure, but for example on Garmin or Apple Watches, you can use maps to navigate around. Just met some people who’s smartphones were torn out of there hands while walking through Paris or London. Using a smartwatch instead of a smartphone to navigate with google maps, apple cards or organic maps could be an option

Wanna see somethin scary?
Well, the Polish startup Clone Robotics has introduced a prototype of a full body android with artificial muscles. Although it looks very realistic and the movements are less “robotic” than those of their competitors, it looks very scary to me. (Probably because it IS so realistic)
Don’t know what you think about it, but it reminds me of Westworld and Frankenstein

Apple has been ordered by the UK to create a backdoor in encrypted iCloud backups to provide official access for security officals.
Bad enough if it only affected British users, but in fact, it affects all iCloud users worldwide.
Sure, it's not Apple's fault, but if they implement a backdoor on demand of the UK, other countries may follow. This would finally mean that Apple's end to end encryption is totally useless at all.
Have you ever thought about building your own private cloud to backup your data, protecting the access with a VPN like Wireguard? Maybe it's time to think about it.

The times when you’d need a “specialist “ to change a graphics card or install a hard drive are long gone. And for the stuff, there are mostly cheaper ways to buy it than in a store….

Well, I cheated on BSD. Really…. Someone told me that if I really want the best of BSD, but with support for modern hardware, I should try Gentoo. There, he said, I would find everything I like about FreeBSD and it would be easy to setup and to avoid Poettering-software.
So I tried it. Setting up is a bit more complicated, since there is no installer at all, but yes, all of my hardware is supported and even sound over HDMI works. But setting up the LVM with a RAID 5 consisting of three NVMEs with full disk encryption, drove me nuts.
I will definitely go back to FreeBSD again. Nice excursion, but nothing for me… But from time to time it’s good to see what’s happening on the other side.

Or “WhatsApp has my data anyway, who cares, n2h” Even better: “I know my smartphone is full of bloat- and spyware, but I can’t do anything about this and it was only 150€. No matter, I have n2h”
