And I think the region would actually profit, the eastern Algarve and southwestern Spain have lots of interesting areas, from beaches for surfing to natural reserves. Sure, there are also the "Mar de plástico" of vegetable farms, but there could be more sustainable tourism if you could reach the region more easily by train. If you have to rent a car, you stay in the usual tourist hot spots like Albufeira and make day trips, congesting the roads...

@nprofile…wuyc @nprofile…jqw2 not really difficult terrain, the highway is super flat and has only a few bridges. There are some hills and rivers, but nothing weird.

@nprofile…wuyc @nprofile…jqw2 Portugal is very car-centric. However, with the recent modernisation of the Linha da Beira and Linha do Algarve, some improvement is happening, so not all hope is lost. But People in Lisbon have cheap flights to Madrid, and for them anything outside Lisbon just doesn't exist or are cave people who do not travel. Local transit can be done by "Metro Buses" in the small towns, train is only needed to go to Oporto for the Lisbon crowd.

@nprofile…wuyc @nprofile…jqw2 German train nerd with close ties to Portugal here... Faro - Sevilla is discussed quite often, some newspaper articles in the last months said that it got higher Prio for the Portuguese government. However, high speed rail has been discussed since more than 25 years and nothing ever materialised. Connection to Spain is nearly non-existent, instead of just improving on what they have, there is always the magical high speed which will solve everything and can be discussed endlessly
