Just learned that Madeleine Morley, former senior editor at the (sadly defunct) AIGA Eye on Design has joined Dinamo’s staff as Head of Publishing & Communications. Fascinating to see fairly young foundries building an editorial staff while the main national design organization in the US is contracting.

Also curious about what changes they made to ITC designs, and why. They mention these improvements in one of the phototype catalogs but without any detail. Perhaps it was just fixing or adding eszetts and what not, but I’d love to know if they actually redrew other parts of the fonts.

Never trust a font retailer to tell you the full truth about type history.
Lots of old typefaces are miscredited and misdated on MyFonts (as the rigorous background work by the old editorial team steadily rots away), and now even the newest stuff is deeply misleading.

BTW, you can see many of Tschichold’s drawings, proofs, and notes for Sabon at the German National Library’s colleciton which went online in 2021 (https://ausstellungen.deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de/tschichold/) incl. drafts for a serifless Sabon, also duplexed (https://portal.dnb.de/opac.htm?method=simpleSearch&cqlMode=true&query=idn%3D1236178637).
I haven’t dug through it all, but maybe the handset (Stempel) version of the italic is in there. @npub1l0j…3ulg @npub1eee…e209 The reason for this shape is that Sabon was designed with the constraints of the Linotype and Monotype machines: the italic letters had to be the same width as their roman counterpart. (https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/97/sabon)
It’s a common problem with text faces of that period, and the thing that keeps Sabon from being a favorite of mine, but Tschichold sure did beautiful work with the limitations!

The conventional wisdom that users are completely oblivious of OpenType features is way overblown. We see plenty of examples of swashes and alts in use on @npub1c04…mrgj and @npub1qax…6s0z.
Yes, I can see why it’s frustrating for type designers to make something that seems rarely used, or generates lots of support questions.
But I wouldn’t advise punishing the most engaged customers by abandoning OT features altogether.
