So far Apple will not launch their AI within the European Union 🇪🇺 (Apple Intelligence) but the trade off is that EU folks get access to third party app stores.
It is similar to Meta, who declined ActivityPub support for EU users on Threads, but they get the ability to experience Instagram without ads for a fee.

Large corporations (anything above 1,000 full time employees) have to be careful when it comes to exposing consumer info, as they can be fined thousands, millions or even billions of dollars.
I currently work for a large company, & it is frustrating how simple, great ideas are killed or delayed by the legal department.

Huh‽ [@threads](https://threads.net/@threads/ ) made #ActivityPub opt-in for legal reasons. [@wordpressdotcom](https://threads.net/@wordpressdotcom/ ) did the same thing. Both are massive, for-profit corporations who are under a lot of scrutiny.
Turning on #Fediverse sharing as a default option would open #Meta to not only potential personal lawsuits, but more wrath from the @npub1m96…ag4y (which they are trying to avoid right now).

I voted “Mostly by network” as most platforms that we use implemented federation as they did not incorporate #ActivtyPub from the start (even if they embraced the idea within their respective spaces).
#Mastodon, #Misskey, #WordPress, #Threads, #WriteFreely, #Flipboard & #Pixelfed (I am naming the services I actively use) all added #Fediverse support after their debut.

I had friends & business contacts on both #Facebook & #LinkedIn.
But guess what! I could always reach out to those friends & family via iMessage, email, phone calls or FaceTime.
I do not need social networks to connect with friends, family or colleagues.
Social networks are the icing on the cake, but the cake is being able to contact them via email or phone.

You analogy does not make any sense as using any of these social networks is optional. If you do not like a service, then just leave & do not use it.
I have left #Facebook & #LinkedIn over disagreements with their ad polices or (with the latter) the “premium spam” I was receiving (companies at the time could pay to harass you with spam).
These platforms are at best tools. If the tool is not to your liking, stop using it.

People find them useful so they exist. The ad business model is for those who want to freely use their services.
Hosting & using social networks costs money, & without a way to generate revenue most of the Internet would not exist.
Paying to not see ads or have your info siphoned off is a great alternative.

#Meta should just offer people in #Europe (& the rest of the planet) a simple option: either opt in to have your personal information sold to advertisers, or pay a fee to use #Facebook, #Instagram, #WhatsApp & #Threads.
