I'm new to self-hosting and struggling to get my services accessible externally. I'm using Traefik as a reverse proxy on a Raspberry Pi 500 running Stormux (Arch Linux ARM-based). My public IP resolves correctly via Dynu DNS, and ports 80 and 8444 are forwarded in my router. I've configured Traefik to use port 8444 for HTTPS, but external connections time out. I’ve tried:
• Forwarding ports 80 and 8444 in my router
• Allowing ports in iptables and FirewallD
• Setting my router's firewall to low security
• Verifying Traefik is listening on port 8444 locally (works with curl)
• Using Authelia for authentication (middleware configured in Traefik)
Internal access works fine, but external access fails. Could this be an ISP block or something I’m missing? Any advice is appreciated! 🙏

Hi #SelfHosted community. I've figured out a lot of my setup. I now have a new domain, laniesplace.us, just for #HomeServer stuff. It's set up through Porkbun with Dynu for #DDNS. I've now got #Traefik, #TailscaleVPN, #Linkding, #Forgejo, #Dokuwiki, Code-Server, #Portainer, #Netdata, #Watchtower, #Cockpit, #Pihole, #MiniFlux, #TheLounge, #Filebrowser, #UptimeKuma, and the #Homer dashboard service installed. I'm now trying to set up #Authelia so I can have single sign-on to my services. For some, it's working now, but I can't seem to get Linkding to work no matter what I do. This is on a #RaspberryPi 500 with 8 GB RAM and a 512 GB SD card, running #Stormux, which is based on #ArchlinuxARM. Can anyone help? I'll reply to this post with all my relevant config files in separate posts. What's happening is this: Linkding is supposed to be available at bookmarks.laniesplace.us. When I go there, I see a 401 unauthorized error and a link to sign into Authelia. Once I sign in, though, it redirects back to the page with the 401 error. I've been trying to figure this out for hours with no luck. Files will be in replies to this post.

Hi everyone! How are you all doing tonight? I just had a frustrating experience trying to set up a free #domain or #subdomain for my #SelfHosted services. Unfortunately, I can't use my laniecarmelo.tech domain because its current configuration doesn't allow me to add subdomains.
I discovered EU.org, which offers free domains, and decided to give it a try. However, they require you to have authoritative #DNS #nameservers before requesting a domain. I tried using #Cloudflare, but it wasn't authoritative. Then I looked into Hostry.com, Hurricane Electric DNS, and FreeDNS.
Hostry requires you to add DNS records for your domain before using their service—but how can I do that when my domain doesn’t exist yet? 🤦‍♀️ As for FreeDNS and Hurricane Electric, both have inaccessible #CAPTCHAs on their registration forms with no audio alternatives! 😡
At this point, I'm so frustrated that I've decided to take a break from figuring this out. If anyone has tips for setting up a free domain or knows of accessible DNS services, I’d really appreciate your advice! 🙏

@nprofile…m7m7 @nprofile…gsm3 Yeah a while back I wanted to switch to fully using Arch Linux, but when I tried to install it, I had no audio. I think my BIOS needs tweaks but the BIOS is inaccessible to a blind person, and I don't have anyone around who can help me with that. Then there's the jobs I'm interested in: accessibility testing and taking a cybersecurity course for the blind. The cybersecurity course recommends Windows, and most tools for accessibility testing are built with Windows in mind.

@nprofile…m7m7 @nprofile…gsm3 I thought about keepass in the past, but the syncing thing, syncing it between devices, seemed like a pain. I'm just being honest here when I say I have limited energy (chronic illnesses) so I try to make things as easy as I can on myself. If I go the open-source route, I'd probably use something like Vaultwarden or Bitwarden since it syncs. Some blind people do like the terminal, and if I could go full Linux, I'd probably be one of them, but I'm stuck with my main computer being a Windows computer for multiple reasons, and the terminal isn't as great there.

Also, I'm trying to get my mom, who's not tech-savvy at all, on board with password managers, and something like Bitwarden seemed too complicated for her. #SelfHosting community, how do you get notifications about your projects?
I'm setting up a couple of #BASH #Scripts to back things up and notify me about events on my #RaspberryPi, but I've hit some roadblocks. Here's my situation:
- I know #email is one option, but I'm not set up for it yet. My domain is on porkbun.com, but its nameservers point to vultr.com, where my #WordPress site is hosted. The Vultr server is managed by a friend, so I don't have access to add #DNSRecords for platforms like #Brevo. I've asked him to add the records but am waiting on that.
- I've been using a #Discord webhook, but I've run into issues with rate limiting when scripts send too many messages. Long messages also cause errors.
Now, I'm exploring other ways to send notifications. Does anyone have suggestions for reliable methods or tools that work well in self-hosted setups?

I need an easier way to work with files, though, so I'm trying to set up #WinSCP. I've exported my key from 1Password in both formats available. I noticed it didn't have a file extension so added .pem to the name. No matter what I do, WinSCP won't take the key. Neither would #PuTTY when I tried it. Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this? Anyone else who thinks they might be able to help is welcome to reply too.

Well, I think my #RaspberryPi is pretty much set up. I'm hosting 4 services on it: #LinkAce so I can have my own bookmarking service, #PiHole to block ads, #Gitea since I thought hosting a #Git server would be a good learning experience, and #MiniFlux for #RSS reading. #RaspberryPi users, I need help! After updating my kernel to version 6.6.67-v8-16k+ and rebooting, my MATE desktop environment won’t start. All I get is a blank screen, and Espeakup keeps repeating "black square black square black square." I can SSH into the system, so it’s partially functional.Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
• Rebooting the Raspberry Pi.
• Checking journalctl logs for errors (I have a full log if needed).
• Reinstalling the kernel with sudo apt install --reinstall raspberrypi-kernel.
• Ensuring my /boot/config.txt is configured correctly.
Some relevant observations from the logs:
• The desktop environment (MATE) and LightDM don’t seem to start.
• The error vc4-drm axi:gpu: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes appears multiple times in the kernel logs, suggesting a GPU/display issue.
• Services like rpi-connect-wayvnc.service are failing repeatedly.
• Espeakup works in TTY mode, but no graphical interface is available.

Does anyone else play #WebGames on #Firefox? I really appreciate Firefox for its strong focus on #Accessibility, the fact that it’s #OpenSource, and that
extensions like uBlock Origin still work fully here, unlike on #GoogleChrome. But I’ve been having some issues. When I tried playing a web game, the performance
became sluggish, my #ScreenReader didn’t always activate buttons when I pressed the spacebar, and sometimes the #browser froze completely, leaving me unable
to interact with it.

#WordPress users: Anyone out there familiar with #Pods and #WPGridBuilder? Can't seem to get #facets to work right. I've added 5 facets for my #portfolio: one with checkboxes to filter by project type, one with checkboxes to filter by technologies used, one with a dropdown to filter by year, one with a button to apply filters, and one with a button to reset. The first two don't look right. They only show 3 checkboxes each and the counts for those project types each say 2 when I know I have more than that. I already added custom project types, technologies used, and project year fields with Pods and selected the correct values, so I'm not sure what's going on. I could really use some help if anyone knows what's wrong.

My #WordPress website is finally back to normal—and maybe even a little improved! 😅 I spent all night undoing the damage caused by someone who offered to "help" but left my site in chaos. 🚩 Lesson learned: be cautious about who you trust with your work.
The one challenge I still haven’t solved is making my #portfolio filterable by project type. With 13+ projects and growing, this feature is becoming essential! Ironically, this was my original request for help before things went sideways. 😬 The person not only messed up my site but also claimed it wasn’t responsive (I can’t verify that myself as I’m #Blind, but no one else has reported issues) and tried to take over. Now I’m back to square one—but wiser!
I’m using Jetpack's built-in portfolio feature, which unfortunately doesn’t support filtering natively, along with the GeneratePress Premium theme. If anyone has tips or workarounds for creating a filterable portfolio with these tools, I’d love your advice! 🙏

🎉 Today marks my 33rd birthday! 🎂 Although I spent the day resting while my mom recovered from knee surgery, we celebrated a bit yesterday. We picked up food from a local steakhouse, Trail Boss Steak and Grill. While the steak was a bit tough and the truffle fries weren't quite right, the steak had great flavor, and I really enjoyed the gouda mac and salad! 🍽️
For the past several weeks, I've been sleeping in the recliner in the living room because my current wedge pillow is too firm, causing me to slide down when I lay on it. This makes it hard to find a comfortable position in bed, even with multiple pillows. Several of my health conditions improve if I sleep on an incline. My sister Lacie gifted me a new wedge pillow, which is much softer and should help me sleep comfortably in my bed again. It was one of the more expensive items on my wish list, so I wasn't expecting to receive it given her financial struggles. Her generosity means so much to me. She also gave me a fidget cube, which I already had, but that's okay.
I also received some gift cards, which I'm planning to use for an external hard drive and a few other computer essentials. A special thanks to my pastor, who's sending me a better USB hub and Bluetooth dongle as a Christmas gift, arriving on the 5th. Feeling grateful for all the love and support! ❤️

To #blind people: I'm seeking someone who knows how to use #BrailleBlaster with large books. I need help understanding page numbering and getting it working in a book I'm transcribing and proofreading.
I've tried following the manual and asked for help on the BrailleBlaster mailing list, but the explanation given by another list member didn't help. I can't afford Duxbury and the other translation software I've tried, Sao Mai Braille, doesn't support a lot of US standards for UEB.

Question to #accessibility experts: I'm trying to create an accessibility statement for my new #website since I know it's recommended. I've looked at a couple tools for generating these, but they all ask for things I don't know how to answer. What would you suggest doing here? Okay something weird is going on with my #website. Wow, I just tried the #WordPress desktop app v8.0.4 for #Windows, and it has major #accessibility issues with both #JAWS and #NVDA. I kept having to OCR the window and click on the edit fields before I could type because otherwise, neither one would see them. And if I alt+Tabbed away and back, they'd act like there was nothing in the window and I wouldn't be able to navigate around until I OCR'd the window and clicked on something again. Lol what a mess! I think I'll stick to the website!

#xplorer2 users: Anyone else having major issues on #Windows11Pro? Mine often won't launch, and Win+E opens default File Explorer despite xplorer2 settings.
Clean Windows install, latest xplorer2. Nothing helps.
My setup:
• Windows 11 Pro v24H2 (Build 26100.2314)
• AMD Ryzen 7 5800H w/ Radeon Graphics 3.20 GHz
Experiencing similar? Any fixes?

@nprofile…lk6y Just got a couple of those HDMI dummy plugs you suggested for my #MiniPC. Ordered them a few days ago using @nprofile…e4yn, and they arrived while I was asleep. Was very tired today so slept most of the day.
Just plugged one into my #Windows computer and unplugged my mini touchscreen display. It's working well! Glad apps and websites will stop thinking I'm on a mobile device. That was annoying!

After exploring #R2E, I've decided it might not be the best fit for my needs. Here's why:
1. R2E doesn't support #Inoreader's #OPML format, requiring manual feed addition.
2. I realized I have many feeds and need a more comprehensive solution.
I'm now considering #Miniflux, which can manage #RSS feeds, #Podcasts, and #YouTube subscriptions in one place.
Until I get my #RaspberryPi for Christmas, I'm weighing two options:
1. Self-host Miniflux on my #Windows PC using #Docker
2. Use their $15/year hosted plan temporarily
Fellow #techies, especially those interested in #accessibility and #SelfHosting: What would you recommend? Your insights would be greatly appreciated!

@npub1d64…ws22 Hi, do you still maintain TDSR and the TDSR speech server written in Rust? I tried yesterday to sett it up in WSL but got some errors saying cargo couldn't find the NVDA controller client even though I put it in the same directory as the speech server. Just wondering if you can help with this.

Hey folks! I'm trying to set up a custom app launcher (KeyOp) to open Microsoft Edge Beta instead of the stable version. Both use 'msedge.exe' as the executable name.
Does anyone know the correct command or path to use in the Windows Run dialog to specifically launch Edge Beta?

Frustrated with Google's search behavior! Just searched for "orca for linux in vmware workstation pro ubuntu choppiness" and it autocorrected to "arch for linux..." 🤦‍♀️ This is why I've switched to Perplexity for most searches. Google's assumption that it knows better than the user is so irritating. I meant Orca (the screen reader), not Arch Linux! This kind of "correction" is especially problematic for #accessibility searches.

Setting up an #Ubuntu #VM since #ArchLinux wouldn't work. Using #VMware Workstation Pro. Does anyone know what could cause speech during installation to be stuttery and choppy sounding? I can barely understand what it's saying. This is on #Windows11.

Also, because I accidentally installed Workstation Player at first and then installed Workstation Pro, I now have both on my system. Only one entry shows up in my uninstaller, so I removed it and reinstalled Pro, but I still see both of them. Any ideas what might cause this?

Think I'm going to have to quit working on this #ArchLinux issue for today. I've been up almost 2 days straight, #arthritis in my right hand is flaring, and my neck hurts. I generally feel like total crap lol.
I got as far as installing systemd-boot and rebooting. Now I'm stuck in the boot manager. Would someone more experienced with #Linux be willing to connect with me remotely in the next few days and help? I'm in Central Time, but due to sleep issues, I can't specify an exact time. We can coordinate once I'm feeling better. No offense, #blind friends, but I probably need someone with working eyes since the boot menu doesn't talk.

Still running into #ArchLinux installation issues. I've gotten almost everything done, but I'me having trouble installing a #bootloader. I want to use systemd-boot. I'm using #vmware workstation. Everything I've read says there should be boot options in the #vm settings where I can set it to either #BIOS or #EUFI, but that's not there, so I added a couple lines to the .vmx file to make it use EUFI. Everything went well until I went to set up systemd-boot. I have no efi directory under /sys/firmware, so I can't do it. Anyone seen anything like this?

To other #blind tech enthusiasts, I'm looking for #tech ideas I might like to buy or get. I have a $100 virtual Mastercard I can use right now, and my mom has given me a limit of $500 for Christmas. I consider myself an advanced #technology user and already have a #MiniPC running #Windows, an #iPhone, a #Braille display, an #Android tablet, #AirPods, speakers for my computer, a wireless keyboard, an #AmazonEcho, a smart soundbar, and a #FireTVStick. I've heard about things like the Hable One or DAISY players like the Evo E12, but I'm not sure how useful these are for an advanced tech user who already has a smartphone and a Braille display. Any suggestions?
