I for one am not looking forward to this. Even without knowledge of the details, it just seems imprudent to finalize a deal before the excruciating pain of shortages reaches US consumers and makes the junta desperate for something to show its public.

It also makes SpaceX a monopolist and single point of failure. In a world with sane budget priorities the enterprise would be nationalized and well funded. It's gonna be costly and won't end well.

Yeah, I wasn't responding properly to your question, it was more a normative thought on where current arrangements fall down. Ideally one firm shouldn't have such broad and deep access to the PCs of the world.

Armchair q-backing ... I'd start w/q of whether security is a natural monopoly, and conclude not, b/c given non-zero possibility of accidents, scale of potential damage rises faster than efficiencies of scale. W/o regulatory constraints on concentration or on dissemination of a single firm's products, and given liability cutoff w/insolvency, firms have incentive to expand until social risk exceeds benefit. So I think you end up w/antitrust & regulatory policy at foundation.

Interesting! Good to see bikes pulled to the fore. Viewed from overseas, though, the American parochialism of it is really striking. Taiwan's bike manufacturing network is world class, but gets short shrift; and mention of Europe ends with the velocipede. (Also, the Israeli cardboard-bike-for-the-third-world-poors raised a laugh. For tough conditions you need rugged kit, and...cardboard? Seriously? I wonder how much investment they got for that from people who've never been. 😉)

Great to see the generosity, but it seems like adjusting the filter for entry into a lucrative profession is a different thing from lowering the cost of services it provides.
