well even though I haven't open sourced it, for my dev purposes I run a node server that connects to relays and delivers certain data via an https request, since my app isn't a client. it needs to do some crunching and then return a result, so it's more like a DVM if I can ever figure that out

In the late 90s before the term SEO was widely used I tried explaining to the head of the photo department of a newspaper why the Flash based photo gallery he wanted to use wasn't the best solution. And all he kept saying was, "If it looks better, more people will use it." And try as I might to explain the value of being available to search using metaphors like "yellow pages", I ultimately failed.
Is inclusion into AI the new version of that argument?

Yeah I've been thinking about the single pubkey dillema. I suppose in DVM scenario the deliverable could be JSON or Markup, which the user could perhaps then publish themselves. Not sure, but thanks for giving me some direction

Currently I get them via an email or RSS, but like I said, the goal is to free them back into Nostr, so it isn't proprietary data. I doubt users would want a DM (I don't know) so in an ideal world they'd be displayed in clients , and in a less ideal world, my client at least. It's similar to link sharing in a Hacker News or Reddit style client, just curated ina different way, so I can't see making an HTTP round trip to display an associated image and summary is performant, so I want the metadata to travel with the event, if that makes sense

Well put. This encapsulates the main reason I'm investing more time into Nostr development than the Fediverse, which can still play a role, but the goal should be that no _one_ can get in between two others that want to communicate publicly. And federation doesn't do that. Of course we need more relays, but that's not a design problem

Search implies someone is using an algorithm to filter results. Just wondering if the users want the relays to do that as well. Maybe. But I could see someone considering relays like they consider internet service providers and net neutrality. I suppose it won't be an issue if the concerns are kept separate and transparency is maintained. DVMs are just services (AFAICT) but they are requested and delivered within the protocol

I wonder if some feel relays shouldn't be involved with search and stay neutral, leaving search up to something like a DVM or other service. I guess as long as relays don't become consolidated and there is wide support for search, those arguments go away. Haven't really formed an opinion on it yet

I think they have one point right, a lot of companies might need to be hand held for a while. Micropayments has a reputation of "tried it" and "doesn't work" largely because the mentality in media is "brand loyalty"
Might take a couple years to come around

My projects are very much interested in this.
It seems to me that if a user is trusting a third party to create a filter, then they can trust the third party to be the author of the nostr events needed.
So if a client can look up an event authored by the feed service, that is indexed with a tag of the pubkey of the user requesting the feed, that event itself could contain list of events in the feed
And it could be indexed by any old relay.
So,
1. User indicates to client the feed service it wants to use by pubkey
2. Client requests event created by the feed service that has the users pubkey in a tag
3. The event contains the list if ids for the feed. If the event isn't there (the first request) I guess a DVM is needed to generate the initial file
4. Client requests those ids and displays to user
Anyway, it's a way to utilize existing relays

Advertising supported content on the web was doomed. As the ad dollars grew, they could never outpace the ever increasing inventory created by the explosion of content, so ad prices fell and continue to.
And, like you say, the staff sizes were made for the print era. Unsustainable.
And yes, distribution controlled by third party platforms left only crumbs for the creators.
Could Nostr help? Absolutely, but many journalists still embrace the top down, one to many control that traditional media had and will need a change of mindset.

I started porting a little Mastodon project that was a Nuzzel for Mastodon https://readily.news Sends a daily digest of links shared.
But for Nostr it seems like it makes more sense to put the data on a relay and make it a special purpose client. Almost there. Maybe have something in a week or so

Unfortunately even smart journalists that might influence the companies they work for think Nostr is blockchain, and they think blockchain was just a scam that came and went. So they'll likely be headed to Mastodon or BlueSky first. Doing my best to dispel those wrong ideas. And the other issue is media thinks in terms of reach, also wrong, but also currently a hurdle to get them on Nostr
