Deep breath. Even though we homeschool year round, my cultural default is to reset (mentally at least) in September.
This is my 22nd year homeschooling 😱
It has never been just "plug and play". Circumstances change, and not every child is going to thrive on whatever you did with the last one. Every person is unique and has their own interests, abilities, talents, and work ethic--and that includes our children.
My advice (not that you asked):
* Enjoy your kids and work to maintain a good relationship with them. That doesn't mean being their friend and not their parent; it means not purposefully driving them nuts.
* Let them have a childhood. They don't need more screen time, they need more outside and boredom time.
* Your kids are never too old to be read to.
* Academics is not the be-all end-all of a life well lived. Make sure to balance physical exercise, creative pursuits, animal husbandry, cooking, and all sorts of real life skills.

Finally home after adventuresome and long travels. My adult kids did awesome and kept the gardens alive, even if they did let the cucumbers grow to small footballs and I found more than one small infant sized zucchini 😂. They did quite a bit of harvesting and even did some unexpected canning! Watering my first finished Johnson-Su bioreactor compost. I could've gone another 6" but I ran out of material. That won't be an issue next time, and I've got the second one set up and ready to go. Now I gotta find me some worms to add once the heating cycle is done.
I wish to thank @npub1587…kv0n for teaching me how to do it (and why) and also my two sons who made the process far easier and more fun.
I am SO happy with this! Makes me smile so much.

I can only speak for myself. I have been through trauma (more than once). Never did I question His overarching care for me and directing my paths. He calmed my fears at all times, even in the midst of chaos and pain. When I faced doubt, He sent me obvious and palpable signs of His presence, even when the circumstance(s) didn't change whatsoever. I still live with the fallout(s) of those times. God is good, all the time. That doesn't mean I get the life I want all the time. It means He is worthy of my trust no matter what because of Who He is, what He's done, and what He's promised me. I can't imagine going back to not knowing Him at all, and by His grace, that will never happen.

White wheat is typically used for lighter/pastry like bread, red wheat is far "heartier" with a stronger flavor. I typically like to blend the two (like 1/3 to 2/3) but ultimately it depends on what you're baking and if you want more rise or more flavor. I don't get good rise at all with fresh ground whole wheat when I am baking a true sourdough without adding some all purpose. Sifting the ground wheat helps but it's a big pain and you lose a lot of bran.
Some starters are more robust than others as well. I find a good Russian starter the best rise for ww sourdoughing. https://sourdo.com/

Fresh baked sourdough focaccia today with the first snips of rosemary and lemon thyme in between garlic cloves and sun dried tomatoes. I ate way too much of it but it was worth it.
How are you all doing? Optimistic? Despairing?
I'm good; I know how the story ends 😉
My washer, dryer, and oven all quit within days of each other which was a ton o'laughs. And I still don't have my van back that was stolen and is supposedly getting repaired. First world problems!
But today is the first real warm day here (high of 65! Whoohoo!) and the gardens are puttering along and the kids are all well and good so I'm counting my blessings and watching the barn swallows swooping in open areas between the cedars.

My nonverbal kid is doing ammmmmazing learning how to spell to communicate. This is only "amazing" if you've never had a chance to know what's in your kid's head without guessing (and hoping you aren't wrong) until it gets unlocked by some miraculous hand of God. All these words were spelled on letter boards with effort and persistence. It's crazy how these kids already know how to spell everything (amygdala?!) and do split second math. I bought myself some mom day flowers. I'm gonna love whatever cards and whatnot my kids give me but 🤷‍♀️ I happen to love peonies and ranunculus and used it as an excuse to treat myself. Plus I needed something in that porch corner 🌸
I've grown ten babies, sadly lost one of them, and to this day rarely get an uninterrupted night's sleep. I wouldn't trade these beautiful and incredible people for anything, but if I can buy myself some flowers in celebration of them, I'm gonna be good with that.

I'm about finished in the garden, everything has transplanted well and looks good. Garlic planted last fall looks great, too. This year I'll have to pay attention to watering but next year's project will definitely be adding drip. I've got some thinning to do, two more beds to plant with green beans and whatever else, and a spot on the ground ready for all the squashes. A few stragglers remain under the dining room grow lights (flowers, mostly), but I've got room now for whatever interesting starts I find at the nurseries now. Seedlings are sprouting and I can't wait for my flowers to bloom!
Speaking of blooming, lots of that going on here. Gah...mock orange is a wonderful scent. Forget-me-nots and bluebells are everywhere!
Lord willing, now it's just keep everything watered, keep the weeds down, and enjoy the harvest.

I finally got a good look at my van that was recovered (it had been stolen). I really want to knock the thieves heads together, shaming their mamas and all. They even used my ice chains to rip out the seat for whatever reason. They abandoned it stuck deep into mud on the side of the road.
Insurance is supposed to pay for it but it's still 500 bucks out of my own pocket for the deductible. $500 for their joy ride that I could have used in so many places. At least the kids' car seats were still there and the van tested clean of drugs (I insisted on testing).
And.
I learned when I got home from TX that the drive shaft on my pickup literally fell off onto the ground 😫 Another 200 bucks, at least.
There's nothing I can do about any of that. So I transplanted my tomatoes into their little red greenhouses, planted potatoes, and enjoyed the massive apple blossoms outside.
I refuse to let morons or other crap that happens rob my joy.

I have a small shed I'm converting into a coop, too. I'm second guessing getting more chickens. I've had both chickens and ducks, and ducks seem to do better where I am. Either way, next year will be great with all that bedding!

I know I'm working hard right now bc this is a new place for us, and I'm not getting any younger so I want to get systems (and perennials) in place sooner rather than later. I actually enjoy working in the dirt, but I also like the aspect of doing work that will enable me to eat more from my own backyard. Sounds like you're on the other side of doing all of that?

I've been popping on and off here slightly amused by the "trending" topic of women not feeling welcomed here 🙄 I'm here bc I enjoy the freedom to own my own content and want to learn more about Bitcoin and permaculture and off grid living (and and and...). I actually enjoy reading all the protocol stuff that's over my head not bc it makes me feel stupid, but bc it's interesting and I get the bigger picture. I want to contribute to the community with my knowledge of herbs and health and healing and homeschooling and how to stay married for 30+ years. Lately, I've been working very hard to get my garden going between the seed starts and transplants and raised beds and mulching and physically emptying my truck bed of material. Today I took some of my kids out to support a friend's sandwich shop and then came home and planted eleven fodder trees. I just don't have time to emote about how someone is "making" me feel. For the record, I feel great and am happy to be here. If this doesn't feel like a good space to be in, try going outside and go grow something instead. Learn to mute bozos. Or just follow women you relate to and ignore the accounts that bug you. Or just delete your account and do something else. I for one am learning to avoid the "trending" topics 😂

Excellent series for homeschoolers! As a former teacher I agree 100% the problems of the school system. Things were already bad when I was teaching in the early 1990's and I've just seen it get worse over time. I started homeschooling once my babies showed up and have never regretted it. There was a ton of value in this episode; I'm going to use some of it for my graduating son this year ("show me you know xyz and I'll give you your diploma tomorrow"). Thanks @npub1587…kv0n

Interesting discussion! I have also yet to find anyone (at all) who takes Bitcoin. I generally ask farmers and small business owners like coffee shops. To be fair, I don't have any yet to spend (I'm trying) but I keep hoping to find people in my local community to connect and maybe trade with (if they'd even want to give up any of their Bitcoin, which I would understand not wanting to!). At the very least, I hope they see potential (and real) customers who want to move in that direction.

Another way to get your spring greens and nutrients in (and into the kiddos too): put it on your popcorn!
Here: a powdered seaweed blend, powdered ramps, and powdered dandelion. I like using powdered nettles as well. Add a bit of butter (or, in our case, a lot) and a sprinkle of nutritional yeast.

Trying to figure my way around Primal on desktop to decrease my use/dependence upon a smartphone. It was the more reasonable thing to do (vs. using a hammer upon my iPhone).

Today: my husband in his car slid his way to a graceful sided stop in our deep ravine driveway rather than bust through the rails to the bottom. Our new rain simply added an unseen sheet of ice to the road. So we're thankful he's ok, even if our car is stuck.
Also today: water came pouring into our basement floor. Mind you, it wasn't as bad as @npub1h8n…rpev but this is a problem we had last year and had gotten it fixed. So we thought.
I don't know how pumpkin cake adds to any of this but today it just needed to find its way into snack time for us all. Snow is drifting again. Sausage cheddar cream cheese muffins for breakfast this morning.
I was interviewed early today for another YouTube interview regarding homeschooling. It was an interesting conversation which also touched on the roles of Christian teachers in the public schools, how to avoid division in the local church over educational choices, and how to get started homeschooling (hint: if you're a parent, you've already *been* homeschooling since the birth of your child/ren).
It's due to publish on Jan 3; I'll link here when it does.
