Having been immersed in Christianity as a kid, with exposure to many of its denominations, I generally agree.
But there are exceptions… I still very much respect many Episcopalians, Church of God and other liberal branches that truly follow the teachings of Jesus.
That said, when you look at the bulk of Christian history what stands out are the wars and the oppression carried out falsely in the name of Jesus. This is continues to be very true today with the Christian Nationalists trying to force their beliefs on others.

I generally agree with you in relation to communism. Socialism is a really broad concept. On the more extreme bits we agree. On the more mild bits we disagree. I’d also say that Jesus was a socialist (far more so than me). So I’m surprised with you having an issue with it.
But basically I don’t see those 3 things as equivalents. Each is quite a distinct thing.

Why? No children are harmed... It's the same reason anime with child-like characters is legal most places.
I could understand a mandatory disclaimer that no children where involved in the creation of the content, but more than that is just censorship. Our (porn) industry exists because the law says you need to meet a higher bar to censor.
I feel zero need to understand other people's sexual preferences - just as I don't need other people to understand mine. All I would like is for people to be good to each other. If someone can be sexually gratified without harming someone else - great.
We don't need to know the provenance of every image to fight abuse.

Geez… there’s so much wrong with that reply…
1) Context - the need for a gun in Manhattan is very different than the need for a gun in the Alaska wilderness. I’ve lived in NYC for over 30 years there’s literally zero need for the average person to have a gun for defensive purposes here. If you scream for help someone will hear you and the NYPD will be there moments later. But in places like the Alaska wilderness you’re stupid to wander outdoors without a gun.
2) The type of gun - almost no one wants to outlaw regular shot guns or hunting rifles. The issue is guns that can be concealed and high capacity automatic weapons. Lumping them together muddles the discussion.
3) All sorts of aspects of your life are reasonably regulated already. Take cars - there are mandatory safety features. Speed limits. Seatbelt laws. Etc. The idea that we can’t discuss the equivalent for guns is absurd.

It's an interesting way of looking at it. Nostr isn't so much about status - you can't even be sure how many followers someone has… I'm not sure I want Nostr to get focused on status, but status is also about reputation, and reputation does make sense in a lot of contexts… Can we take the good part from the idea of status and incorporate it somehow?

1) The term “hate speech” has nothing to do with whether it’s criminal. Hate is hate, whether it’s illegal or not.
2) The UN’s broad definition is based on them (collectively) seeing hate in a very broad range of situations. The fact that my example meets their definition bolsters the point I was making.
3) The fact that you’d choose to moderate it (presumably because it’s hateful) is exactly the point I was making.
As far as “protocol-level” vs “platform-level”… Protocol-level censorship is impossible on Nostr. There’s no point in discussing it. It’s a red herring.
“Platform-level” stuff is more complicated. There are very specific use cases that are being built on Nostr that are clearly “platforms” (e.g. the creator solution Mazin is building). Then there’s “kind 1” which I think is better called a “common area” shared by many platforms.
The protocol needs a way to let everyone experience the common areas without fear or harassment. Which in practical terms means letting their “community guardians” label things that are problems for their community as problems (like content matching their definition of “hate speech”).
Saying that labeling things as “hate speech” is problematic makes the problem worse, not better. We need to acknowledge the problem and address it.

You say "The term 'hate speech' is hate speech". I give an example where my announcement of the first LGBTQ relay gets a reply of "kill all child groomers". It was a clear death threat - perhaps not aimed specifically at me, but aimed at people _like_ me. I label that "hate speech" and you push back saying…
"Is that a political statement or a personal threat? The former is protected, the latter is criminal. "Hate speech" as a category is a way of criminalizing speech based on its political content."
So you just labeled a death threat as a "political statement". Basically you're condoning, or at least excusing/facilitating, violence and murder.

Or to look at it another way - you make it clear that you're a Christian. I was brought up in an evangelical/fundamentalist Christian home. I went to a Baptist school for many years, church three times a week… There was even a period when Jerry Falwell was my pastor. I understand Christianity well. (I'm now a Deist.)
So "what would Jesus do" in this situation? If you look only at his words and his life - he relentlessly stood up for the powerless and the disadvantaged. He accepted people for who they were and simply asked them to be better. The only time in his life he was ever violent was when people had corrupted religion. When it came to civil society he advocated getting along with others - going as far as simply accepting the authority of a violent/abusive government (e.g. "pay unto Caesar…", and allowing himself to be crucified).
I'm sorry, but the Jesus I studied as a child would never see what I posted as anything but hate speech. He preached the exact opposite of that - "Do unto others…"
I think what you're missing is that intolerance of intolerance is a double negative. The outcome of being intolerant of intolerance is tolerance, not more intolerance. That's just how double negatives work - both in language and in math. Saying "The term 'hate speech' is hate speech" is wrong because you're saying intolerance of intolerance (e.g. calling hate what it is - hate) is just like other forms of intolerance. It's not.
But seriously - if you're gonna label yourself a Christian - at least try to be Christ-like… Jesus didn't/wouldn't call death threats "political statements". While he might tell someone to "turn the other cheek" when faced with a death threat (as he did), he wouldn't condone/excuse/facilitate the person issuing the death threat.

That’s important because hate is somewhat universal. This is why communities that adopt Nostr need to be able to have safe experiences. That doesn’t mean they should be ghettoized and confined to their own relays. It means they need to be able to explore the “common areas” of Nostr and encounter a minimum of hate in the process.
The proposed NIP-69 is part of the solution. So is the proposed NIP-97. Both of those will let people choose their own experiences.
But the “guardians” of those communities - the people who have the fortitude to face the hate - need the tools to find and report the problem so that sympathetic relays can remove the content. That’s something NIP-69 can do that NIP-97 can’t.
We can’t stop the hate. But we can manage it. If we don’t manage it, Nostr will become a very dark place. I would hate to see that happen.

I’m fine with the app dropping connections to the relays when it’s not in the foreground. (In fact I think that’s probably how it should work - or at least limit connections to them). But what I’ve noticed with Damus and other apps (I’m running betas for Damus, Nostur & Nos) is that when the apps go from background to foreground they don’t reconnect to the relays. To me that’s the biggest problem. I wait a few seconds, then kill the app and restart it and everything is great.

Have you consulted a lawyer? Running a legal creator site is easier said than done. Adult content makes it 10x more complicated. Since you’re literally hosting the content and controlling access to it, you’ll be liable. I ask because it sounds like you’re saying that the same level of difficulty would be a negligible delay for a bot on a fast server, but take an unacceptably long time for a human using a web browser.
In that case bots will have an advantage over many real users.

I looked at spam.nostr.band… I see existing strategies (e.g. "follower networks") plus NIP-69 (user-specified moderators → feed filtering) as solving the spam issue for users - except perhaps in their "global feed".
Public relays have a big spam problem. You've devised some strategies for that, I'm sure others have as well - but that's beyond my personal area of interest or expertise. (Though I am curious to hear what works.)
Paid relays will have a problem with moderation report spam since it's a catch 22… If they make it so only paid members can file moderation reports, then they have a legal problem. If they make it so anyone can file a moderation report then they have a potential spam problem. They can start by ignoring reports about content that's not on their relay. But they can still be spammed. Which is why I'm so glad @npub1ktw…mrvj mentioned PoW as a possible solution and want to understand that better.
Beyond that - I would look for unusual patterns of reports. First, take out the reports from people (and bots) you trust to one degree or another, then…
- Are there a high number of reports about the same piece of content?
- Are there a high number of reports from the same IP? (use /64 for IPv6)
- Are there a high number of reports from the same pubkey?
- Is the report from a new pubkey?
I monitor for (non-Nostr-related) attacks on my server now. Everything from SQL injection to blog comment spam. It's all IP-based. I look for "bad neighborhoods", so if there are too many IPs with infractions in the same subnet, I block the entire subnet. (More easily done with IPv4 than v6.)
I think pubkey age is a great metric. I see Primal has that data. You probably do as well. That's valuable data! I'd love an API that could be hit to query on the age of suspicious pubkeys. In exchange relay owners could probably give you hashes of IP addresses without compromising privacy laws - so you could answer the question of whether pubkeys are coming from the same IP (without knowing the IP).

NIP-68 deals with labeling. It can be used for everything from reviews, to scientific labeling, to stock ticker symbols. It allows for both structured and unstructured labels to be put on _any_ applicable event. With NIP-68 authors can update and correct the labeling of their events after initial publication. It also allows third parties to add labels. (It is expected that client apps will restrict visibility of 3rd party labels to people in the labeler's "network" or trusted in some other way.)
NIP-69 was largely rewritten. It is now based on NIP-68 labels. It specifies two "vocabularies" that can be used for content moderation. One of the vocabularies is fairly set and rigid and deals with the types of moderation issues that are most likely to arise on Nostr. The other vocabulary is completely organic and open, and intended for things like regional moderation issues (e.g. insulting the Thai king). Client apps can use as much or little of the vocabularies as they like.
NIP-69 tries to establish a model where content moderation isn't black and white, but rather has many shades of gray. So people can recommend everything from showing the content, to content warnings, to hiding the content, to actual deletion.
Another "shades of gray" factor is that our approach to content moderation is based on the idea that everyone can be a moderator - it's just some moderators are trusted by more people than others. Moderators that are trusted by relay owners will obviously have the biggest impact since only relays can actually delete events. It's a bottom-up approach where people pick their own moderators. (The next step will be a NIP for "Trust Lists" so people can specify whose reports can filter their feed.) Given that censorship is an act of power and control where someone imposes their preferences on someone else, this approach to content moderation is highly censorship-resistant since it's a voluntary, opt-in scenario.

I spent the weekend rethinking "NIP-69" that @npub1wmr…g240 and I had proposed. Based on some of the comments we had gottten I started with the idea of "labeling" and made the data needed for #ContentModeration just another type of labeling data.
That required coming up with a NIP for doing labeling. I made it so you can use _any_ coding system / defined vocabulary. Do you want to tag your posts (or someone else's) with some ISO code, or a GeoNames place ID, or some code from a structured vocabulary like MeSH? Or maybe you have your own defined vocabulary (like I do)… You can do that with what I'm calling "NIP-68". You can see it here…

I'm hoping that NIP makes Nostr interesting to the scientific community. (It would be very funny if "the gay porn guy" kicked off the process of getting scientists onto Nostr.)

It does have an impact on how things are done now. It deprecates both NIP-36 and NIP-56 and requires paid relays to accept moderation reports from unpaid users if the content being reported is on the relay. (Without that change relay owners may never know they have illegal content on their relay).
Client apps can keep their current "report post" UI (or enhance it with new features), but they will need to change the event that's sent from type 1984 to type 32123. The few apps that are using the reports to filter/block what their users see (like @npub1gcx…nj5z's Amethyst) may need to make more more substantial changes (but they may want to wait, since this isn't the end of the suggestions regarding content moderation).
I'm still discussing with Rabble the best way to present 68 & the new 69 as Nostr PRs, but that will probably get done in the next day or two.

We have a pull request proposing "NIP-69" as a first step in that process, and have a more general "issue" open on Github discussing the topic more generally. (The links for both are in the link above).
The basic vision is "bottom up" content moderation where communities can moderate what people in their community sees via interconnecting webs of trust relationships. The end user will pick the people/organizations/bots they trust to have a voice in moderating their feed and only reports by those people will be factored in when the user's feed is filtered by a client app.
So for example, I could mark "exosome" as someone to block and he will then go on the block list of everyone who has designated me as trusted moderator of their feed. And he could go on the block list for relays that trust me as a moderator.
These discussions are good, I just thought of how the whole model can be extended…
Everyone is talking about how the client apps will eventually support algorithms that filter users' feeds - pushing some content up in the feed and pushing other content down in the feed. This model can factor into that… So the same events that are used to block content can be used to promote content if they had the ability to endorse as well as suggesting blocks and warnings.
For example, if a fellow Nazi really liked "exosome" he could endorse him and people who trust him would see more of exosome's posts. And to extend things further a user could have reverse trusts lists that basically say "do the opposite of whatever this person says to do" . The possibilities are actually rather interesting.

To me censorship is always top down since at the core of censorship is some authority flexing their power and enforcing their idea of what's good and bad - overriding your idea of good and bad.
Instead I want to see a cacophony of voices with individuals choosing which voices in that chaos they want to listen to for filtering their feeds. (Or they could choose to listen to none and see it all.)
But systems have to be put in place to make that a reality. It won't happen by accident.
And yes, the government will always force a certain level of censorship on us. But there are ways around that. For example our relay can't have anything related to escorting on it thanks to FOSTA/SESTA (horrible law), but people who need to do posts related to escorting could use #[1]'s relay. And that's the whole point with Nostr - it's censorship-resistant, not censorship-proof. Nothing is censorship-proof…

Today I posted on an adult webmaster board saying I have a different, more positive perspective on crypto thanks to Nostr. One of the OGs warned me about talking positively about crypto… Apparently there's a huge amount of animosity towards everything crypto in porn despite the fact that the porn industry pays ~10-12% in fees and lives under constant threat of Visa & Mastercard refusing to work with them at which point their business will completely fold… [Not to mention all the problems with banks - which are enormous.]
Here's how the conversation went (edited to make it flow):
Him: that sounds good, except 95% of consumers won’t use crypto
Me: Nostr will change that. It was designed by Bitcoiners with the intention of “orange pilling” users (their term for “onboarding” them - getting them to use crypto in daily life).
Him: so, bitcoin can be as low as it want’s if consumers don’t use it, it’s not a large solution.  in the “alternative billing” niche…
Me: if you get a customer onto Nostr. They’ll soon have a crypto wallet, and then they can pay you in crypto with basically no fees.
Him: that’s the barrier.  getting them into Nostr and seeing up a wallet.  huge bottleneck for volume. i think your best bet for development is focusing on nostr…  stay out of billing completely.  it’s a shark pit and will burn you alive. the sheer amount of vitriol of all the people that have tried alternative billing “solutions” that branded then is horrific and they will attack anyone coming in with pretty much anything , regardless how good it is.  Thin ice to tread
Me: Let’s put it this way, the majority of people who sign up for Nostr will eventually enable Lightning payments because it enhances their experience of using Nostr. It’s then up to site owners to figure out if they want to take advantage of that new opportunity or not. Nothing is stopping them from continuing to do things the same way.
Him: just giving you the heads up to the pitfalls in this realm.  Thar Be Dragons! I can think of at least 6 people on here that will eat you alive on this topic.
Me: I’m not forcing anyone to do anything. And BTW, Lightning payments weren’t even a thing before 2019. They are a new, streamlined, “off-chain” way of processing crypto. So people may have tried crypto payments, but they probably didn’t try Lightning payments.
Him: just be careful. these OGs do shoot the messenger
Me: It’s like trying Pernod and deciding you never want to drink alcohol ever again. I’ll be like “sure… you do you, but this Manhattan is delicious!”
Him: The ones that will attack are [insert names here] and these guys are old school porn mob and don’t mince words
Me: Oh, and don’t forget all the billing companies!
Him: the billing companies will remain mute to see which way the wind blows inc are they thing there is an opportunity for them to add crypto to their offerings

When it comes to getting hauled into court intent matters. I can document a track record of working to prevent the dissemination of CSAM and other illegal content.
Rabble and I proposed “NIP-69” as a first step to get workable, bottom-up content moderation on Nostr.
Just today I somewhat publicly challenged the ASACP (the porn industry’s organization that fights CSAM) to get involved in the content moderation questions related to Nostr. I asked them to make statements supporting your approach to NIP-94 and to oppose NIP-95.
I’m doing my part. My intent is clear.

#[2] does proxying? I know #[3] does it. I’m not sure what I think about it. Snort does crazy compression to the point that my pics look like crap. If Iris is doing it, then it’s great - things are nice and crisp. (Need to look at the URLs when I’m not on a phone).
The screenshot is why I think Iris doesn’t do it.
Would be nice to offer to #[4] users. But I’ll probably have to run a client on my domain to make that happen. Would be nice if the clients let you pick the proxy service.
That said, I do worry about the legal implications of being a proxy. It’s possible things like CSAM are (briefly) on your server. BUT clearly with proxy there’s no intent to break the law.

Personally Nostr gives me hope. If we can come up with a individualistic, culturally-neutral, bottom-up approach to content moderation and show that it can work. It's a framework that could be put into law. Other aspects of the tech world could be brought into the picture as well. For example IETF's Privacy Pass could be used to validate device-based content preferences and pass them onto sites which would allow parents to "moderate" what happens on their kids' phones.
I really love that Nostr exists and we can have these discussions and possibly set an example of how things should be done. It's not something corporate America would ever manage to do properly.

I don’t see the point between a request for a relay to edit something and a request for a relay to delete something. There are no guarantees in either case. Relays will get reputations. And the winners will be those that do what the user requests.

It’s a problem that will kinda solve itself over time.
When users understand that Relay X refused to delete their content but Relays Y & Z did the delete, they’ll stop using Relay X and get their friends to do the same. They’ll also think twice before using a blaster relays for anything but deletes.

Weird. A moment ago I saw a post from you suggesting delete and reinstall.
I did that and contrary to what it said during the delete it didn't seem to delete the data. When I went back in I was still logged in. How is that even possible?
