I don't have a solution. I don't know how to fight it. All I know is that 2008 felt like a flood gate being let loose and from there, it just never got better. I haven't even gone over the complete shitshow regarding all of the covid monetary policies here in the US.

It has been 15 years since the federal minimum wage was set to 7.25. In that time, CEO pay in some industries have gone from 125x the average workers salary to over 500x.
Those same people are trying to replace you with AI, when it is their job that is redundant. I just read about the newly appointed starbucks CEO who is going to fly a private jet every week to commute into work.
Its opulence to the point of overbearing disgust.

I should also state that this was specifically a problem for Ubuntu 20.04, which is an LTS release that will be EOL in a year. There's 22.04, then 24.04 that literally came out last week.

kinda sortta. It takes a lot of effort to build deb packages and get them to the point where they are just fire and forget. Then the packages all require maintenance to update, and packages it depends on, as well as packages depending on that package need to be checked for compatibility.
Its a pondorous thing, and the trade-off for pre-packaged binaries: You get the convenience of: Its in a central location, managed by a trusted entity, and I don't need CPU cycles or systems know-how to compile it. Give me a laundry list of things to install for the thing I want to run, and boom, its done.

good thing I'm dogfooding the installation instructions. The version of cmake in ubuntu 20.04 isn't new enough to compile one of the libraries I need to make snort 3 work. Had to add instructions to add the kitware apt repo for 20.04 to use cmake in order to build vectorscan.

y'ever have a bag of lentils explode on you? I did yesterday.
It was a bag of cheap-ass dried lentils from wal-mart. The plastic seam split and there were FUCKIN' LENTILS EVERYWHERE.
Of course, I cleaned up as best I could, but I have no idea how many have managed to go into hiding.
Gonna remodel the kitchen like a decade from now, and find lentils growing in the walls.

my advice if you work in cybersecurity is to pace yourself. You're playing a roguelike in which there isn't a win condition. It just loops, and becomes harder.
