@nprofile…luvt I got an iPad mini a couple of years ago, mainly to use as an e-reader. I haven’t used it as much as I intended, but the size is ideal and the display is superb. It’s *marvelous* for reading my Mastodon feed.

When I was growing up, I was promised, sometimes implicitly and sometimes explicitly, that if I followed the rules that the authorities told me to follow, the system would grant me a comfortable life.
What I discovered was that the rules are arbitrary and variable and impossible to follow perfectly, the authorities are arbitrary and variable and impossible to understand perfectly, and the promises were lies they told to prompt my compliance with the system.

Today, I saw a serious Facebook post from a close friend, and I noticed that Facebook invited me to choose from a set of instant AI-generated comments. None of them said anything really original, but they resembled thoughtful responses — full sentences, not punchy little phrases — and they sounded relevant to the post. Click once and the words go into a text entry box; click again and it’s posted as a comment that people think *you* wrote.

I’ll listen again on the regular feed. But I found myself saying, “Optics! The lenses make all the difference” while I was listening, and I couldn’t get into the IRC.

@npub15ml…2w4s Wearing an Apple Vision Pro isn’t the same as staring at a screen a few inches from your face, because it puts lenses between your eyes and the screens. The lenses bend the light from the screen so that it's exactly like you have a larger screen farther away from your eyes. The myopia problem arises when the screen is optically very close to your eyes; the Vision Pro lenses change the optics.
