Hitler was obsessed with Greek and Roman culture, seeing it as the opposite of the “degenerate” modern art that he loathed. To possess the Acropolis, the most important symbol of Greek antiquity, was no small thing for the Nazis. They made sure to raise their flag high over the Acropolis... until two university students snuck onto the Acropolis and tore the flag down.
