A combination of few trivial countermeasures in Mastodon servers would help raise the bar for spam attacks IMO.
On the outbound side:
1. Prevent the use of temporary/throwaway emails by default. (Can be done without blacklists via delayed verification)
2. Limit outbound activity (especially @mentions) from freshly minted accounts to accounts they don’t follow.
And inbound:
3. Limit inbound activity from infrequently seen instances.
4. Limit activity generally with servers running outdated versions/protocols.
5. Default new accounts to "Block DMs from people you don't follow”.
This won’t stop more sophisticated spam techniques, but it would prevent or mitigate the crudest methods like the current spam attack. This would free up human moderators to deal with bigger issues.
Other things would help too, but these are passive measures that require no attention from admins. It’s important that future abandoned instances aren’t so easily exploited.

As in, I want to see replies from people I follow, and replies from people they follow.. but by default hide replies from people who I have no connection to. (With other blocking tools available as well of course)

@npub16rs…dfz9 I bought an external ssd today and that seems to work fine. My other drives work ok through a hub (which I don't have with me) but error out every minute or so when connected directly.
Copying from the hdd to the ssd seems to be working without random ejections, so I guess it's triggered by writes and not reads.
It worries me about the robustness of my backups though!

@npub178r…qekt I wonder if a workaround could be to render images with a border for Mastodon posts, so all photos are at a standard aspect ratio regardless of the original.
It’s ugly and would require a loss of resolution, but might eventually encourage change in a stubborn malicious compliance kind of way. Could be implemented in the posting client, or as an export action from Lightroom/C1/etc.
