Often the same columnists who frequently criticise younger generations for being "sensitive snowflakes" and complain about how people these days need to 'harden up' and be tough, will be the ones writing about how it's impossible to ride a bicycle anyway because sometimes it might rain, or perhaps there'll be a hill on the way.
Or you know, maybe once a decade you'll buy a new refrigerator. Touche, can't ever ride a bike because of that one trip you might do with a piano or a bed.

They'll title their piece something like "Council just spent 1 bajillion dollars on a bike rack" and when you actually read the article they're talking about a project that demolished and rebuilt an entire street, upgraded pipes, power, traffic, got new signage, added all kinds of upgrades and yes, included a bike rack (that by itself cost maybe a couple of thousand dollars).

So tired of our media farming outrage clicks by stoking a pointless culture war against bicycles, that in the end hurts everyone.
Cyclists are worse off, children are worse off, the environment is worse off, public finances are worse off, and even motorists are worse off.
The only ones who benefit from the anti bike rhetoric are car companies and the fossil fuel industry.

It's legitimately bleak AF that believing things like "we should oppose genocide", "end Apartheid", "preserve a livable future for our descendants", or "avoid spreading a disabling disease unchecked" make you a Radical in today's society.
Those should all be basic decent human starting points.
But here we are.

If someone honestly says "I'd support climate action but they painted some rocks orange/damaged paintings/made me late for work", boy they're gonna flip out when they hear about mass extinction, coral bleaching, drought, floods and crop failures.
At some point, disrupting the death machine is more important than pleasing people who aren't going to support the necessary movement anyway.

IMO if months of livestreamed genocide and an endless stream of images of dead and mutilated children aren't enough to bring someone to support *at least* a ceasefire, we have to conclude that that person cannot be persuaded by anything activists say or do.
Similarly, if decades of climate science, increasing severity of natural disasters, crop failures, and collapsing ecosystems aren't enough to *at least* support a rapid energy source transition, perhaps they just don't want to be reached. 🤷🏽‍♂️

yes, that would be far better.
Unfortunately, it's not what the current govt of Landlords is doing.
Nor is it what has been done in the last 40 years here.
But ppl need homes now and that grant was the way first home buyers could hope to compete in an investor's market.
If it was removed as social housing was built on mass, and profits were taxed, my opinion would be different. Right now it feels like ditching the lifesaver without rescuing the castaway from the raging ocean.

The First Home grant was what allowed my whānau to finally be able to afford a modest townhouse in South Akl.
We love our little home. 🏘️
It is infuriating that a similar opportunity won't be available anymore to other people like us.
(I get that it was an inefficient subsidy on demand, but in a market as cooked as NZ's it was also a helpful tool. One that shouldn't be removed until the supply variables in the equation are solved. And currently they are only getting worse, thanks CoC)

Lots of attention given to absenteeism, threats to fine parents, online dashboards for real-time student tracking and all the BS non-solutions.
Instead we could clean the air in schools, normalise masking in risky environments, regularise testing, support adequate isolation. But for that it would be necessary to break out of the collective delusion and admit that #CovidIsNotOver.

I love my American friends, but they need to see that the problem is not who the president is.
Or which party rules.
That's a false choice.
The problem, as it's increasingly evident, is the US hegemony as a whole.
Putin, Netanyahu, Modi, Xi, they all suck.
The world is full of terrible fascist leaders but none is more dangerous than America itself, whoever leads it.
