At one point today my Mum suddenly snapped into complete focus for a brief moment, totally recognised who I was (there’s confusion about that sometimes with me being a quantum superposition of up to 4 different people), grabbed my hand, looked me straight in the eye and said “I’m so glad you’re here Steve, you’re doing so well”. It was such a surprise in the moment I didn’t lose it but now I can’t think about that moment without instantly becoming a mess

In a way I think I get it. I hadn’t driven a car for a year, and not in this region for years, yet 5 minutes after getting back behind the wheel it’s all second nature again. “Like riding a bike” is the maxim and there’s clearly a subconscious hindbrain thing in play that kicks in for me being out of practice, but also for my Mum even with her deteriorating brain. And the act of doing it seems to collapse some of the fractal mind mazes she’s normally trapped in. We had a good day

You’d think I was insane to allow myself to be driven around the village by my moderately Alzheimer’s impaired mother, but she keeps being officially cleared to drive and its one thing she hangs on dearly to. I’ve mostly been ferrying them around (my Dad has never driven during to eyesight impairment) but she desperately wanted to show me she could do it. And you know what, her driving is perfect. And weirdly, her speech (mostly hard to follow) noticeably improves while she’s doing it

Another tough day but it’s funny how you can be surprised by something good. In a rare semi-lucid moment going through old folders my Mum picked out a eulogy I’d written for my grandfather (her Dad) 20y ago, she’d printed out & kept it. It clearly meant a lot to her still even though it was hard for her to express. I’d described him as “a big hearted Yorkshireman, part Womble, part Wallace” and it made us both laugh because it was so apt. Nice one, past Steve, you did us a solid today

Dementia is a fecking awful thing to watch. There’s occasional glimpses of the person behind the fog but they’re upsettingly fleeting. A cruel experiment in how much of a person you can erase while still leaving them there. 😢

Every week there’s an article about the high vulnerability of package managers to supply chain attacks and I’m just amazed it’s taken this long for people to figure out that routinely auto-pulling 500 disparate third party libraries unseen into your project is a terrible idea

It's been 9 years since we had these UPVC windows installed, and I only just realised that there's a little tab at the top and bottom you can slide to a different position to stop the windows opening too far. This has previously been a big pain on hot but windy days, struggling to reach the window handle when it's been pushed fully open on a window that's behind a desk, and worrying that a gust whipping it open might damage the hinge. 🙄🙄

Now that I’ve discovered I can save about 30% on my coffee bills by ordering it by the kilo instead of in 250g bags, I also discovered that pouring out 20g of beans from a big 1Kg bag is…unwieldy. Plus they won’t remain as fresh with me opening that big bag all the time. So, I bought myself a Fellow Atmos vacuum storage tin to keep just the next few days’ worth in at a time ☕️

Agreed, it’s the OG chest high wall game. We always liked how weighty the movement felt and how it made you need cover. A lot of my friends hate it because they want high speed run & gun stuff but it suits us much better. We started with GoW2 on the 360 and went back to the original shortly after

genuinely stoked for this. I didn’t play GoW for ages thinking it was too bro heavy and CoD like but I eventually played it co-op with my wife and we loved it, have played and enjoyed all of them

if you use it while understanding the design parameters it’s probably fine, unless you’re very constrained by size or perf. The main issue used to be not knowing if different implementations had variances which broke your assumptions, or needing to step outside the standard behaviour for some reason. Maybe that’s got better over the years? Since coming back to C++ I’ve been using UE’s containers. I never liked the way STL turns simple compile errors into long form essays though

One thing Linux proponents responding to this need to understand is that time is my most valuable commodity. I’m an old man in tech terms, I maybe have a decade tops left in me, and my body is fecked so I can’t spend evenings and weekends hacking anymore (without causing myself damage).
I don’t consider fussing with an OS to be good use of my time. And if it’s not 100% as functional for my current project setup, thats a bad investment.
If I was 25, sure. 😉

Honestly almost everything coming out of MS right now screams GTFO but I really don’t want to have to deal with Linux on the desktop (barring everything else, UE is just worse there). Apple already disappeared up their own arse years ago so that’s not an option (and again, UE is worse).
I’m going to have to make Win11 work for at least a few years and just be 100% on my guard for BS and lock it down to a known decent state.

I wish it was normal for PC cases to come with this kind of power switch. So satisfying.
Plus, cats wouldn’t be able to flip these like they can so easily with push power buttons
