@npub1gq5…yxjq @npub1xfk…f3v5 @npub1eav…g6f3 Still trying (here in Scotland) not to use electricity to grow plants but it gets harder & harder to avoid. Our issues are mild wet winters/summers both of which are getting wetter far faster than we can keep up with. Germination mats are ok but I haven’t ever used lights - which may have to change. It’s a struggle to grow as our temperate seasons trip over each other and look increasingly the same.

@npub1788…9nku Again, I agree, but we don’t have time to wait for wholesale political revolution, (so while we are campaigning for it) maybe a tax is a step forward in a way in which voluntary industry sponsored carbon ‘off-set’ or whatever nonsense name they want to call it is never going to make a difference.

A lot of the well-meaning messages on carbon trading create a false equation: we can’t fix it with trees = tree planting itself is useless. As well as huge #CO2Reduction We need a #CarbonTax & we need to use a it to plant trees. 79% of the USA’s electricity comes from direct burning of fossil fuel- transport still relies heavily on direct burning of fossil fuel. Burning trees 🌲 is a disaster but not replanting a worse one.

While a big fan of rewilding: letting grass grow. A tool I use a lot is the Husquvarner brushcutter - it makes organic field management possible (and yes, before you ask we have a scythe & use it regularly but the brush cutter does thistles/path-clearing much more efficiently than the scythe). Today’s problem is that the little plastic connector that catches the pull-back on the starter cable has broken. Can’t find one online anywhere😡. Have emailed suppliers. #Mend #Fix #Smallholding #organic

@npub1sk5…qf7z Yes and no. The Blaeberry as a wild plant is a native to Scotland’s moors. This is a garden plant bred from USA strains so not the native Scots blaeberry but still flourishing in our climate.

@npub1afh…4l67 If It germinates there’s no reason it wouldn’t fruit. Just be aware of potential final tree size. Our old apple trees are enormous and picking is a challenge. This is the real benefit of a dwarfing rootstock.

But we’re only a half hour walk from our son’s house (our destination 🙄) so doing the sit in the car in relays. The Nissan Leaf doesn’t have a spare tyre (to save battery) so nothing else to do but wait. 👍

@npub1ckw…z9cs Well yes and no. If we just use price rises to push people then that’s unlikely to reduce CO2 emissions very much just stress people’s pockets. What about price incentives for low CO2 emission holidays? Lower prices for hotels with a vegetarian menu or no pool? Maybe cheap holiday express buses and trains? A grant for everyone who takes a holiday within land-travel distance of their home?

3/3 We can’t expect our holidays to go back to *normal* because the normal holidays we created in the 1970s & 1980s are unsustainable. Everything from coal burned to make the Chinese steel in the hotel construction to the swimming pool maintenance to food waste in hotel kitchens to the CO2 emitted in the food production - it is all unsustainable. It was all done & paid for by ‘us’ so we could have a fortnight in the sun - which we believe we have ‘earned’ but at what cost? #ClimateCrisis 3/3

2/3 Like my diet improvement, we need to think about how the CO2 is made and where it comes from. We need to stop and think before we rebuild the places that have burned. We can’t have our target getting 1000s of tourists back on a plane to the Greek Islands next year. Our target needs to be reducing CO2 drastically now and *never* getting back on a plane or next year more will burn. We need to reduce construction with steel and concrete not just rebuilding as was. 2/3 #NoFlightPledge

A thought about the #ClimateCrisis & human motivation. I am trying at the moment to improve my diet, not for weight loss nor for a wedding or a holiday but because I want to eat more healthily for my whole life. This is really hard & I need to work at it! I love my bad food choices. The whole planet 🌎 needs to go on a low CO2 diet, not for a year but forever. We all need to make low carbon choices & we need to legislate for lower CO2 emissions, & we need to campaign for it. 1/3 #ClimateDiary

Today, in church, I asked people to have a think about Jesus making an analogy between ‘sin’ or wrong actions (wrong time/wrong place actions often) and ‘weeds’ (or a plant in the wrong place), and how that has informed the Western post-christian worldview of ‘weeds’, and what the legacy of those views might be: for farming and for people. @npub1hpc…hjn3 Additionally the numbers 9, 90 and 99 and (of course 999) had symbolic meaning in Hebrew numerology and are very much connected with significance in storytelling, so Tolkien was also drawing on these ideas of significant numbers - perhaps subconsciously- but I tend to think he though all these things through.
