@npub188q…3jlx I know you've had a great experience but man when I started on desktop Linux a year ago nVidia was a nightmare no matter what guide I followed. It almost made me quit the experiment until a friend of mine kindly donated a 6600 to replace my 1080 with. Night and day experience.

@npub1gl5…7hk0 Any idea how I can trace down a gnome-shell memory leak? This has been happening for around a month, and it's not any extensions or startup apps. It just keeps growing until gnome shell crashes usually in 2-3 days after performance goes to crap. Not sure what changed.

My server may be small but I'd prefer it not to immediately implode a month after I die when my credit card gets deactivated. Hey everyone -
I took the liberty of installing Bird UI from @npub1cmg…rzd2 as a test to see how it goes over. It's our default at the moment and I think it's got a lot of readability advantages over the Mastodon default. I'd still like a custom UI related to our focus, but this looks like an improvement.
If people don't like it let me know and I'll revert. Feedback appreciated and thanks to Roni!

One minor point is that I believe the loss of professional media could exacerbate the disinformation/misinformation system as bad actors in that space are not operating for profit and they would then have free reign to spread their message without a strong and professional response/debunking.

@npub1grx…uxfe I took care of my father until he died and now my aunt through Alzheimer's dementia. The first thing the docs did was force them to quit smoking. Smoking is one of the leading predictors of dementia and rapidly accelerates it's progress.
Another thing people don't seem to realize. And let me tell you, after 13 years of being the primary caretaker, dementia is one of the worst ways to go.

@npub1rzy…zpg7 I mean, it was a tradition going to the copy room and getting the new builds. I know I kept the last Neptune one that made it to a CD. Not sure how many others I have but I definitely have that one. I *think* I have the last Win2k Beta2 build that supported Alpha.

@npub1rzy…zpg7 Yes. I was working on the ACPI team and we had builds. The expectation at the time was that it would rapidly come to consumer, Intel was highly optimistic in those days. The hardware was horrible.
We also had a overclocked 1Ghz Athlon by Kryotech to represent what we believed would be a 'typical' system in the next couple years performance wise.

@npub1rzy…zpg7 I guess, so. I was working on the adjacent Neptune project (mothballed Dec 1999) and we had IA64 and we had Alpha 32bit builds, but I never saw a Alpha 64bit build. We discussed how much we'd like to see it but were told it was all Intel for 64bit.

@npub1rzy…zpg7 What the hell? I worked on this and never saw a 64bit build. I have no idea who was building it in 64bit, tons of underlying work was not yet done by Microsoft to make that tenable. The 64bit Itanium builds were atrocious.
Also, I loved the Alpha and had one at my desk running up to beta 2 builds of 32bit Win2k.
