Well - basically on Linux there is an "App Center" - from which to install apps.
Those mentioned .exe's are Windows software executables (gotten from, say, at worst from fishy websites and ya might guess the rest).

One thing is that people assume Linux to be like Windows in its workings.
When it's found out that on Linux getting software by goin' round 'n' about in the internet looking for .exe's is not the way - but distros app repsository - it is also often found out that Linux is actually simpler, quicker and safer :thinkhappy:

In computing generally - just try to remember to take and keep backups & you're pretty much home free.
Timeshift is one asset (for example in Linux Mint installed but not activated by default) that takes timely snapshots of your system - to roll back to if issues occur.
