Gussie update: as an experiment, I blocked off the door to the bedroom where he'd been hiding for several weeks, and I opened the door to my office, where we have been rehabilitating him. He left cautiously and poked around the hall and then went all the way downstairs to the kitchen before he decided that he had explored enough for the day. :)
