Eligibility for social assistance also plays a role. It's my understanding that even in the countries that have provisions like this, mostly only people who would be able to make enough to fully support a disabled person listed as a dependent can successfully immigrate and stay in a place. 2/2

Thanks for the info. This is more than a lot of countries have for sure. Still very limited though. It's similar to what I know some countries have in place for immigrants of people who are parents of disabled children. 1/2

State nationalism tends to produce that way of viewing events. I think it's a significant part of why people don't realize exactly how normalized, even naturalized, eugenics really is or how far it's tendrils stretch into everyday stuff.

It gets bleaker when you realize that it's also true for almost all of the Nordic democratic socialist countries that USians think are paradise compared to the US. I think Finland is the one exception but I'm not sure exactly to what extent it differs from the others.

Number of days since somebody makes a general suggestion that ppl run to Canada to escape US fascism without knowing that the vast majority of nation states don't accept disabled people as immigrants and that Canada will quite literally offer disabled people assistance in dying before offering them assistance in living: 0

Even if you just didn't want to go into an institution, that's valid. Also, I don't think being a caregiver makes it any more acceptable for them to think of or treat a disabled person like a burden. The problem is the lack of options, specifically the lack of community support. Caregiving is definitely undervalued but that doesn't justify holding the opinions of caregivers about the value of disabled lives above those of disabled and/or chronically ill ppl.

I know this isn’t the point of your story here but I’m honestly surprised your friend actually put in that much effort to even try to find something. It seems like the vast majority of ppl who will say something like that to a disabled person don’t even bother investigating. They just keep assuming whatever they did before.
I also think you have superhuman patience and grace, bc if it were me, that person wouldn’t be my friend anymore.
