If you’re not a news anchor or political candidate the best way to prepare for speeches is to have a short list of bullet points and use it for reference.
And also, practice your speech beforehand. Film yourself practicing and watch it.
This stuff everyone pretends is easy is actually pretty challenging. It’s why so many people have a fear of public speaking.

Lots of people on here talking about teleprompters obviously haven’t even tried to sing a song they don’t know well off a karaoke machine, let alone actually tried giving a speech off a teleprompter.
Try doing it while having a friend film you, or read a short speech off some paper pasted up on the wall behind your friend holding the camera. I guarantee you’ll look at the video and be like “oh my God I come across like a concussed alien.”

I think I said months ago that #Biden should take an adversarial stance with much of the mainstream press for a variety of reasons. After seeing the #NYT and other outlets try to *manifest* “Biden’s dropping out” like it’s WMDs in Iraq, I’m even more certain that it’s the smart thing for him to do.

Right-wing dominance of the government and other institutions not only normalizes awful, previously unthinkable things in the public and political sphere. It also reduces the appetite for, and ability to imagine, supportive, equitable, liberatory, and non-violent alternatives in the public and political sphere. Things don’t bounce back when a more progressive government is elected: the damage to the public discourse and imagination is often durable and can be long-term.

With increasing misogyny, queer phobia, school shootings, climate change, etc., yes of course kids are worried. Especially young women and LGBTQ kids.
It seems like their anxiety over real substantive issues is getting blamed on social media because adults don’t want to deal with it and kids are learning about it and discussing amongst themselves on SM

The APA, for one, says that certain aspects of social media can be harmful, but doesn’t flatly say “social media is bad for kids” and in fact it can have benefits for young people.

China also uses a similar approach: they picked two standard reactor designs, learned lessons from the initial builds, and now they can bang ‘em out in 2-3 years. Of course they are also building solar…and coal generation.
It’s only in North America and a lot of Europe that we haven’t figured out using standardized builds to speed up the process, somehow.

It doesn’t *have* to be slow to deploy. When France decarbonized their entire grid in the 70s using a fleet of nuclear plants, they standardized on one design. The first one took a while to build but the subsequent ones went much faster because they’d worked out all the kinks from the first one. And it took them only a decade to totally decarbonize their grid this way.

I suspect that as far as institutional clients are concerned, Microsoft thinks it did its duty by making it so you could turn Recall off in Group Policy Objects. That doesn’t fix the problem of, e.g., random contractors’ computers taking Recall snapshots of PII, PHI, and other sensitive data.

You can say that about solar panels, but as long as the organizations that build, own, and operate them are for-profit companies, profit is going to be top of mind.
It doesn’t matter if the generator is powered by solar or wind or coal or what: if it’s owned by a private company, that’s how it’s going to be. (Which is why utilities should be nationalized/in the public sector.)

The protests have generally been disruptive *but not violent* until the cops showed up. Similar to a lot of BLM-related protests and gatherings in 2020-21.
The only exceptions are cases like UCLA where counter-protesters attack the protesters. And then the cops either don’t keep the peace or make the situation worse

And I see some of y’all saying “but AI can help with reviewing this big codebase.” No, I assure you, it cannot. If humans can’t understand these huge masses of code, then AI (which isn’t really that at all) certainly can’t, because AI doesn’t “understand” anything.
It can maybe find possible compliance/rulebreaking issues, generating many false positives along the way, but not holistic/architectural gaps to be exploited. You need humans to find those.

I think it is worth clarifying that the danger of deliberately or accidentally introduced vulnerabilities is not just a problem with this particular codebase or open source projects or anything like that. This is a problem with *everything* because it’s all so complex these days.
No single person “understands” it all. No small group of people does. Nobody can. It’s too big.
