Just checked. Lunar escape velocity is only 2.4km/s. Definitely need rails that hold not just to rest on.

Gravity being so much less wouldn't require full weight track anyway but if you went too fast you could accidentally reach escape velocity. Building rails like a roller-coaster would maybe more sense, and if tunnelled wouldn't have so much dust problem.
All theoretical anyway!

On principle if a machine breaks or stops working such that I need to replace it because I still need to accomplish the function it provides then I always buy _better_ rather than repeat.
Except at the moment I'm wondering whether a repeat might actually make more sense.

All my other machines (I operate on the box-per-service principle) have some sort of video output but this one, my media server, has an rj45, one usb (in use), and a power socket. As a box it's very stable and worked perfectly for years but it needed an OS update (was 2018 lts now 2022lts) which failed to complete in-place.

Whenever I buy something I keep the box it came in, in case there's a fault with it, and put the box in the loft. Then I keep the box because I might need to pack the thing into it if I move home. Then I just leave it there.
This afternoon I removed some boxes from the loft and broke them down into cardboard sheets, removing all the tape. Now all piled up ready for next recycling collection! So much space! (notallboxesgone)

It is difficult to not see the Israeli government's collective punishment of Palestinians as anything other than apartheid ethnic cleansing.
