Question: What are your thoughts about Standard Notes?
Been thinking of giving it a try because I'm looking for something simple and with good cross platform support. I've been using OneNote but find it to be overkill. Obsidian is also fussy, and Joplin doesn't like iOS.
What is giving me pause is primarily subscription fatigue. Is it really worth the cost? Is it any better than using Simple Note (beyond privacy concerns).

Techies of the Fediverse: Is there any way to create a small-scale search engine that only works with a handful of sites? I have a number of cooking sites I use for recipes and it struck me how cool it would be to be able to create a small search app that searches for recipes but only on those dozen sites. Finally, when I was making two of the books, I realized that I did not have paper big enough for the inside panel. Then I remembered that I had these old calendars from Paper Source. I had used some for covers but realized that they would be perfect for the insides!

This one is a variation of a Coptic Stitch and, though it looks really easy, it is deceptively difficult to make because you need to learn just how much tension to give the thread. It is one that I will be trying to do again when I get some new thread.

Here are two long-stitch books with different patterns. The first (the black one) is a long-stitch sketch book and the other is a criss-cross pattern. Both look awesome! The red threads on the second one at the top and bottom were actually to cover up the fact that I made the book too long for the paper and only realized after making the holes

Here was a Belgian Secret Stitch sketchbook I made for my spouse. I wanted to try making another one of these books because they were so much fun. I also experimented in using less sketch paper in each signature (bundle of paper) and it worked much better. I did the same on the smaller sketch book in the next post.

The second one is a Belgian Secret Stich. This was such a fun one to make - and it feels so professional, too!
When we visited Portland last summer, the only place we went many times was Powell's City of Books. It is the best bookstore in the world. I grabbed an extra bag because I knew I wanted to make a book out of it.

Bookmaking Saturday!
Today it is a butterfly stitch book. It is a bit loose and rests open pretty easily. Similar to a Coptic stich but a bit easier on the hands...and I love the interwoven threads 🤗

Started a new #bookmaking class on Visibly Sewn Books at Lillstreet Art Center in #Chicago. I’ll definitely post new projects when they are completed!
Here are some old pamphlet stitch #books that are some late Christmas presents.
The left one has a bookmark from Powell’s in #Portland, the middle is from an old calendar, and the one on the right has a sticker from Death Wish #Coffee. Amazing how rounding corners makes things look better!

Help! My main Mastodon page only loads the Home Feed. I can't access any of the menus on the top or the side. I am on Vivaldi. I can load my page through Elk and through the Side Panel just fine. The larger has an image is from a map for the Art Institute in Chicago (Alma Thomas' "Starry Night and the Astronauts) and the other is a postcard from the Portland Saturday Market!

Finally got around to some more bookmaking projects! This was my first attempt at doing cloth covers, and I tried making an accordion book with thicker paper and a Coptic stich sketchbook. I'm really proud of them and feel like each time they become a bit easier.

I was surprised just how radical it really was.
Apparently it did poorly in theaters but did pretty well in streaming.

"The Years of Rice and Salt" is definitely not perfect. I did not like the ending. And I don't think all the chapters are equal. But I really liked its premise, and Robinson's view of alternate history is intriguing. I loved a lot of small details. For example, electricity being called qi or climate change being called "balance with nature" reflecting a world more rooted in Buddhist concepts. I'm currently reading "Ministry of the Future" and am liking it. 1/2

Oh goodness, one of my favorite genres! I love "The Years of Rice and Salt" by Kim Stanley Robinson. The story looks at a world where Europe is destroyed by the Black Death. What makes it so fascinating is that Robinson shows how world history would have unfolded in roughly the same fashion with some new locations or focuses. For example, a Renaissance takes place in Samarkand and many cities in our North America are in the same place.

Preparing the intercessions / prayers tomorrow for Church. It seems to me that when the #Episcopal Church updates the Book of Common Prayer, there is a real need to expand the prayers and meditations to reflect our grief and our calls around #ClimateChange. #Environmental breakdown stresses not only the physical or geological but also the mental, psychological, and spiritual. Religions have a vital role to play going forward.

Another day when #Delhi comes unexpectedly to #Chicago.
The most striking thing is that the air SMELLS like Delhi today.
Spouse and I spoke this morning about purchasing a supply masks because this sort of thing is not really going away.
Be careful of the air - limit your time outside and wear a mask (N99 ideally, N95 if you've got it). You may not feel poorly right away it now but you will feel it later.

I am contemplating exploring #Lemmy or #Kbin but for now, I think I want to do more here to build up #Mastodon, and to invest in #BookWyrm and actual use my #Pixelfed account. The great thing about the #Fediverse is that so much is happening all the time - and we can follow along no matter where we are.
While I don't know how the stuff with #Reddit will end, I think some people (like me) might need some time to mourn what might be lost - and hope we can find it again.

I've been thinking about the difference between the #Twitter and #Reddit implosions. I was not very invested in Twitter, so I did not feel like I have been missing much. But Reddit is a different story. I went through a bad period a few years ago and, far from being a cesspool, Reddit actually helped me pull myself out of my slump. Sharing with others on things I care about was a godsend. I don't care about Twitter - but I am sad about the stuff with Reddit and the loss of communities. 1/2

I came across a post about "Aestus" (Book 1) by S.Z. Atwell (@npub13up…l5fw) during Independent Author Month in April. It seemed to tick a lot of boxes for me: #Solarpunk -adjacent, #ClimateFiction, #SciFi, etc.... So, I gave it a go! I finally finished the novel about week ago and I have been thinking about it since. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Well-written, engaging, thought-provoking, with excellent characters. 1/4

@npub1cpp…2uya Isn't BlueSky still invite only? I sometimes worry that a certain vision of Mastodon has been beginning to be calcified by some people. It has its flaws but I've had mostly a lot of fun here and found it pretty easy once you learn the language and the practices.

The citizen has a responsibility to act well in relationship with others. Simone Weil in The Need for Roots wrote about how in modernity we often talk about our rights but we do not often talk about our responsibilities as members of communities.
