@npub1a84…wlgu I was DIRECTOR of a specialized academic library. While I had (always shrinking) staff, the institution's priorities governed things, which meant that people who weren't librarians were telling me what to do. Budget was a big hammer, but in the later years they started having ideas that weren't even academically sound.

@npub1a84…wlgu Institutions can become impossible, and sometimes there is nothing left but to find yourself someplace else. Toxic administrations or people can be a part of this, but there are plenty of times when the people are lovely, kind, courageous and institutional dynamics make flourishing impossible. This is especially the case with libraries.
I have much experience in this.

@npub1a84…wlgu After my experience of working with a Black congregation over the past 9 years, it's not just those who BELIEVE that, but also many who presume that saying & thinking the right thing without making concrete & costly changes that by their actions cause this reality to be perpetuated.

@npub1a84…wlgu Neither do I. Especially in more recent years as security concerns, etc have caused them to make it so you can't go or come as you please. Someone I know once was at a party in a building above Times Square with a view of the proceedings while being warm inside. That's closer to it. But I think that's when you could still get on a subway whenever you chose out of there.

Jay Rosen was talking about "not the odds, but the stakes" BEFORE J6-and it applies not only to saving democracy, but making clear to readers what consequences of electing any official--their vision, policies, inclination to do one thing and not another. It's not so much partisan as paying attention to what's happening in the election rather than the horserace.

But there are complex rationales, with citations to documents & legal theories, that obfuscate these things. Sometimes it's not clearly stated that this is what they're doing (thus veiled)-they appear to be making legal challenges.

Seriously, a big fine and having the cancellation of his & Trump Org's licenses upheld could well cause a cascade that would leave him broke about the time he's convicted of the big felonies.

@npub1a84…wlgu The thing that's really absurd, in my opinion, is that it requires flexibility-ENTIRELY TO BENEFIT THE INSTITUTION. Were I to take a p/t job, I'd want it on my terms. OR at high end consultant rates. Not racing around NJ for peanuts. Also, you have to become a NJ resident for the privilege.

@npub1a84…wlgu btw, the least shocking thing is the athletes. Generally they are recruited with attention to being academically qualified & an Ivy League formula makes sure they are, pretty much. At Princeton, the admissions officers noted that MOST of their kids from non-college parents were athletic admits.
