I agree it's confusing.
It shouldn't really matter much which one you pick. Your same identity should work in all them and display the content. Each app of course is different, but the distinction is smaller than choosing what fediverse server to use, because the app is separate from the data and your account.
For login right now it's a browser extension, which isn't good. We're adding oauth style login with identity servers which should be a lot easier for users to grok.

There’s tons of social media about what’s left on the Playa after burningman… this year was even worse than others because of the rain and mud. What none of these viral media posts cover is how there was actually less left this year than past years. I managed to upset some folks on bluesky when I suggested they need to focus less on kicking folks off of the one server running now and instead focus on moderation for when federation is enabled. I’m curious what folks in the fediverse think.

@npub1juy…vh5e thanks. I wasn’t sure if I was missing something. Why aren’t there clients yet? All of nostr with dozens of clients and full implementations of the protocol has been done in half the time since the DSNP spec was published.
I think big systems should be build a small pieces loosely joined. It’s like evolution, it takes time and iteration through use.

I think the fediverse was a good idea at the time. But in reality it's like choosing to live in a small community oriented absolute monarchy instead of the really big corporate one.
Users should be able to have privacy, which can't exist on the fediverse. Users should be able to use their content and profile as they choose instead of only being able to do what their server admin allows.
That and mastodon's dominance means a single person has veto over most things. 😠

The fediverse is a network of fiefdoms. It means you can't build applications on top of AP, you can only build new AP hosts. User migration between fiefdoms is clunky, name changes don't work, there is no way to make an app ecosystem the way you can on nostr and at_protocol. You've got lots of servers, but they've got all the power, not the users.

Everytime people join a new social media app like bluesky, nostr, scuttlebutt, mastodon, or originally twitter, there is this utopian feeling of how wonderful and nice it all is. I made a video about that, understanding the dynamic and how to keep it alive.
I think we can design some systems that work better than the centralized social media platforms which went from utopia to dystopia.
