I'm Sth Canterbury and it's the driest I've experienced for a very long time. Into May and no autumn growth to talk of on paddocks. Trees probably suffering too but harder to gauge.

Trees made way for Centre Pivots.
El Nino happens on a cyclical basis and Norwester is a legend there. Early settlers planted shelter belts. Trees have been replaced with water.
Farming budgets include the cost of watering your ryegrass to grow in regulated conditions. Tree planting will never return to Canterbury unless it's subsidised or enforced or both.
