@npub1u5h…9wm3 Statement ~ unmasking is about the experience of #autistic people who alter behavior often in unpleasant ways to try to fit in better (sometimes soothe) w/ allistic people. A big Q on my mind is what I could cease doing to make others happy. For example, maybe I don't plaster a stretched smile and hold my eyebrows up on my face to look more inviting, less grumpy. It seems obvious and sound, but conditioning is real.
It's hard to explore living more authentically, when people are so easily and obviously irritated by absences due to actual illness. Act like it's a moral falling. Even if I spend more than 8hrs working productively from home where I won't infect others. But then they say they support staying home when you are sick, untruthfully.
In terms of #DEI, I refer to "diversity, equity, and inclusion" efforts academics seem ever eager to tout the importance of... but inconvenience tempers their conviction. I do not believe them, but it looks good on job applications.

The worst part of being #sick isn't the #exhaustion, the #coughing #pain sometimes leading to a dry heave, the sinus pressure, the fevers, etc... it's the very apparent disappointment in others' faces when I say I won't attend an event. How could I ever expect them to tolerate any #unmasking I might want to achieve in the future? All while being fed BS about #DEI initiatives mattering and being important.
