My guess would be that "online" means that you have an open websocket connection with the relay. And when missing then the websocket failed to open. Maybe restarting the app will have it try to reestablish a connection.

Do nostr apps typically use the HMAC-SHA512 key of "Bitcoin seed" when generating a BIP-32 derived seed? I'm assuming the answer is yes since it is not specified otherwise under NIP-06, but just checking.

Certainly dubious to say that P2PKH is more secure other than the fact that it is more private. And the privacy only lasts until the UTXO is spent since the pubkey will be revealed at that point.
Also, definitely correct that P2PKH is vulnerable to collisions since the RIPEMD-160 hash is much smaller than the size of the pubkey.

There's also credence for secp256k1 given how widely it is now used without any notable cracks to date. That is to say as long as wallets practice safe signing. E.g., don't reuse nonce values.

Also, there have been suggestions that the NSA has a backdoor for the secp256r1 curve.
As for bitcoin being fucked if it ever were to ever need a new hashing algo, I'm not sure. I would imagine that several forks would come out of it as a result, and one or more would likely have a fair amount of success. Only time will tell.

A similar reason for why the secp256k1 elliptic curve was chosen over the secp256r1 curve for DSA signatures.
Although, that does not mean that any of those are immune to future discoveries of vulnerabilities or backdoors or being broken.
And if/when that day comes, then the community will have to accept a hard fork. Fingerprinting all the accepted block history, and using new hashing or signing algorithms for future blocks.
Could Satoshi have added a small cryptographic spec to each transaction to detail the hashing and signing algo, allowing them to be changed w/out a fork? Or would that come with its own risks of the blockchain's security being subverted if it is made too easy to update such things.

This is absolutely not describing Ordinal Theory, it works exactly the same as how a bitcoin UTXO works where every UTXO still has a branchable value, except this will limit to a single input UTXO.
A single UTXO cannot be collected since it is spent by the signer and new UTXOs are generated as output.
I am suggesting that people may have an interest in holding onto a UTXO that has a short ancestry. Which is not necessarily due to just novelty, but also since it requires less storage to hold the fewer ancestors and less effort by a validator to validate the shorter history.

People love when they receive an old coin or an old monetary note. Can we build that same excitement when receiving a UTXO?
For blockchains, I would say not likely since any given UTXO could have several inputs, from several inputs, from several inputs. Not very special (many-to-many relationship).
What about a unique cryptocurrency that is not blockchain based, and UTXO can only be generated from a single input? Somewhat more special (one-to-many relationship).
Not only would eliminating the bulk of a blockchain allow each UTXO to have a more direct, special history, but it would also allow each UTXO to be more scalable since it would only require the storage of that one UTXO's ancestors.
No need to store the entire network to validate the spending of a UTXO, just store the linear UTXO ancestry of the one UTXO being spent back to the sole origin/root UTXO of the ledger.
Any mobile wallet could easily store all the proof they need for validating their UTXO, and optionally delete any UTXO and its distinct ancestry after it is spent to maintain a lean wallet of only what is needed to validate the unspent.
Sure, there are some complications that need to be sorted out when eliminating the blockchain. Such as protecting against double-spending. But are blockchains really immune to that either? Often times, there are short forks in the blockchain until a victor is picked (some choose the longest chain, some the most dense).
These are some of the ideas behind my Hauprich project, a cryptocurrency built on the Nostr protocol. Will some of them stick? Probably. Will some be tossed? Probably.
One thing I know for sure is that it is easy to criticize a new idea. In fact, it would be quite hard to conceive an new idea that is immune to criticism. So, I welcome any criticism because it only paves the path between what the new idea is and what it must become.

The pubkey would just be a 32-byte hex-encoded string, which will always be 64 hex characters in length since 2 hex characters represents 1 byte.
So, pubkey regex is:
[0-9a-fA-F]{64}
For the npub, I believe that is always a consistent length of npub1 + 58 bech32-encoded characters (not bech32m).
So, npub regex is:
npub1[qpzry9x8gf2tvdw0s3jn54khce6mua7l]{58}
Possible that I am wrong about the public length, but I have yet to come across one of a different length.
Also, validating whether the values decode to a valid secp256k1 key is not something that you could do w/ regex.

Nostr Dev Question:
When serializing an event to generate the hash ID, how should tags be ordered?
I cannot find anything under NIP-01 for this.
Currently, I am storing metadata external to the event to keep track of the tag order respective of how it was received, but that doesn't seem optimal.
Is there a recommended standard? Maybe alphabetical based on the UTF8 serialized strings of each tag? Although, that is certainly less optimal since that would require individual serialization of each tag plus a string compare sort.

Most bitcoin wallets are Hierarchical Deterministic wallet that use a big integer seed to generate a root private key. Then the "Hierarchical" portion comes in by using the root private key to generate a child private key based on a specified index, and so on from that child key.
If the same seed and same index are used, then it will generate the same child private key. This is the "Deterministic" portion.
The derivation path defines the indexes to use for getting the child private key of your account.
A legacy bitcoin HD wallet should have the derivation path of m/44’/0’/0’/0/0. The m/ is the root, then 44' is the next child index and so on. Never mind the difference between the tic and no tic (') for now.
Newer bitcoin HD wallets might be using SegWit or Taproot addresses, which those will respectively have the derivation paths of m/84’/0’/0’/0/0 and m/86’/0’/0’/0/0. Note that they have a different index for the first child.
You can figure out which derivation path the wallet app is using by looking at an address created fresh from that wallet app. A legacy BTC address starts with a "1". SegWit starts with "bc1q". Taproot starts with "bc1p". Compare with your primary address.
