My observation is that while young men generally are weak bitches, the top ones are very, very impressive.
The church mission work crew I headed was incredible. Those teens outwork most fully grown men and they are incredibly mature in their faith. Devotional time revealed quite a bit of wisdom and insight.
I don't see a corresponding group of young women that are worthy of these standouts.

I was chaperoning a mission trip with our church youth. Parents must always be in twos, never alone with kids. One day one of the women came out with me and an all guy crew.
She'd done many trips, but never had an all guy group to manage. She marveled at the brotherhood, the hard work, the cooperation, the absence of drama and complaining.
Yep, I said. Men bond through physical labor. No one wants to be the slacker, ever.
In contrast, the girls showed up at a work site, put on the required construction hats and immediately started taking Instagram shots holding hammers and trying to look cute.
The women on the trip told me that courtship has flipped. It's the girls chasing the boys. It's all they think about.
My crew didn't talk about the girls at all. Sure, they notice them, but they aren't preoccupied with it.
The girls were constantly pushing back against the very reasonable dress code, rolling up the top of their shorts after passing inspection to show as much leg as possible.
I'm glad I don't have girls. Every cultural message tells them to behave immodestly.

There's nothing sadder than picking through the physical remnants of someone's life after they die, especially the distasteful stuff like porn mags.
My uncle lived far away so I hadn't seen him in years. We rushed to hospice when he went downhill, but didn't make it. I remember seeing a picture of me and my brother in his room and realizing how important we were to him in his lonely, childless bachelor life.
I met a woman he'd befriended in his care unit. She'd been the president of the company at one of the places he cleaned. They'd bonded over music. Two people of radically different means and social class and in the end it didn't matter. They just both liked jazz.

My uncle sobered up but went from a professional to almost unemployable.
He worked as a janitor for the latter half of his life and lived in a shitty rundown trailer that I think a friend cut him a discount on out of pity.
No one came to the funeral. One friend couldn't handle it. One was out of town. One was in jail.
That's all he had--three friends.
So my dad and I buried him after a service that no one came to.
But I still see it as a redemption story. He died sober and with his integrity intact.

I guess I'm just a dick but when I see the child of an alcoholic who died of pancreatic cancer post about pancreatic cancer awareness, I think well your dad died of alcoholism, not some random occurrence of cancer.
As someone who has alcoholic family members, I wish people would just be more honest and straightforward about it. When my brother finally drinks himself into the grave, the obituary I write will say he died of alcoholism because that's the truth.
Your life is what it is. I will not be your enabler whether you are alive or dead.

I was chaperoning a mission trip when another parent was leading devotional. The topic for study was a Gandhi quote asserting that the biggest obstacle to Christianity is the bad behavior of Christians.
So she asked the kids what they thought and they start self flagellating about how Christians behave so badly.
I finally interjected. First, Gandhi was not a Christian and has no authority whatsoever to speak on our faith. More importantly, I said, we are all responsible for our faith or lack thereof, unbelievers included, and that in my experience the biggest obstacle to faith is pride.
Scripture tells us that unbelievers know the truth but suppress it in unrighteousness. This was true for me before I came to Christ. I was prideful and loved my sin and didn't want to submit to a higher authority.
I told the kids that they have an obligation to represent Christ in their behavior, but the world doesn't get to use them as an excuse for their unrepentant sin.
