Fedi is a bit of a revolving door. People come, stay for a while, and drift away. That means that if you don't regularly find new people to follow, your timeline will become a ghost town.
I wish discovery were easier. Right now Mastodon's discovery features in particular mostly help you find celebrities.

if you install #Debian with #XFCE, you get the xfce4-goodies package, which means you get xfburn. LOL, CD burning. I don't even have an optical drive in this machine.

The problem with that is the partition layout on the disk. UEFI uses an EFI system partition. Legacy boot wants a "BIOS boot" partition.
You might be able to boot with a rescue USB in legacy mode, chroot inside the installed OS, replace the UEFI GRUB with the BIOS one, and run grub-install. But it would be easy to break your system.

No, you should only tar up your data. Don't try to do the OS files this way. Reload the OS and restore the data.

I would use an archiver or backup program. tar would work fine, but you might like restic better.
