It also should be much lighter on resources than something like Synapse and it's based on the IETF internet standard XMPP: https://snikket.org/faq/#q-why-not-the-matrix-protocol

@npub10r2…w6yx @npub1ske…k9u5 I think the "federated success story" in this case is HTTP, which is old, but you can still build modern things with it (HTML/CSS/JS). The same goes for XMPP, which is also old, but you can still build modern messengers with it (as shown by Conversations, Dino, ...).

@npub1wc2…4sk7 #XMPP clients are okay these days. Of course apps with a lot of funding and no interoperability with other software to care about have more shiny stuff, but Conversations (gratis on F-Droid) is just a solid messenger that does one thing and does it well.

@npub1wc2…4sk7 If they were using Gmail they probably didn't even know they were using XMPP. Now everyone has moved to walled gardens, it will take some effort to get them back. It took some courage to delete Whatsapp but it paid off for me. I think this is one of the easier fights you can actually win, but one needs to be consistent about not using any other apps. I also don't need everybody to be on XMPP. If I text you once in a year, SMS will do fine. Not worth bothering those contacts with XMPP.

@npub19lt…qfjk Yes, some aggregators report the numbers, but you would have to track them all down. I mostly read feeds from my phone, which changes IP address often. Unless you use some kind of tracking technique, you would not be able to trace those HTTP requests back to me.

He did not go to the police and tried to sell them a product like Matrix did. Matrix can't even build their product on existing standards so no reason to use them anyways.

@npub1tx3…kxnn Yes, this is true. The node owning the chatroom can go down and synchronize later. However I'm not sure this is important? I never had any problems with this on XMPP either. Either way they didn't had to invent their own incompatible thing for that, which is much worse (for example sending an encrypted message to Matrix users will never be possible, everything other then plain text messages is not compatible). They should have just made a better XMPP client with their millions of funding.

If you look at the affiliations of the foundation (go to https://matrix.org/about/ > Spec Core Team and click the GitHub links) they all work for Element, a venture capital startup: https://venturebeat.com/data-infrastructure/element-bolsters-decentralized-team-messaging-with-30m-raise
Matrix, Element, Synapse (which is 90% of the ecosystem) is all from the same startup.

Today my classmates made a #[0] group to communicate. Since Discord is not interoperable with any other service, I would have to give them my personal information and agree to their ToS to participate. By using and thus promoting further usage of walled garden messengers like Discord, you take away everybodies freedom to choose.
Make interoperability and standards compliance a hard requirement for communication apps you use. Go #[1] exclusive for messengers! :xmpp:
