It makes a huge difference whether you hate dictatorship because it's contrary to human dignity, or because the dictator is not the one you have chosen. I'm afraid most people don't want to abolish abusive power, they just want to exert it from time to time.

@npub1lfr…3tl9 I'm afraid this sense of guilt will lead us nowhere if all we have in mind is energy dependency and political blinding. I mean, what made us blind in the first place is not only short-term strategies but also vulnerability to the Kremlin's arguments against "the West" (more precisely against the very aspects that I, with all my "marxian" view of the world, would be ashamed to condemn).

@npub1lfr…3tl9 In the present case, regarding the Ru-Ukr war, there are many sociological / political issues the West may not be ready to address. Witness, how we carefully struggle deciding if one should or shouldn't say "the Russians" when talking about a decision made by the Moscow guys, as if this regime came out of nowhere.

@npub1lfr…3tl9 Just re-readmyself and I think I was misunderstood. I'm not saying some people are more able than others to understand this or that. What I'm saying is experience might not play as big a part. More precisely, I think experience is important in that it gives an incentive to understand, but one can experience smth without learning anything from that experience (in France, we haven't learned much from our Vichy past. We sure decry fascism, but we don't quite understand what it implies).

@npub1lfr…3tl9 I guess on a more practical level, to most people in Europe the notion of danger is no different than what it seems to be to other peoples who don't have the same historical background. Experience, albeit undirect in most cases, sure plays a part, but on the long run Reason is a much more reliable means of understanding what one didn't experience. The Americans can understand and many of them do, while I doubt we Europeans as such have a deeper knowledge of these questions.

@npub1lfr…3tl9 I'd rather say (not too categorically though) Putin will try (more than he ever did) to swallow Belarus unofficially, so that Minsk remains officially independant, making it easier for Moscow to use it as a buffer state.
