It seems like so long ago he was sleeping in this space. But these videos are always such a good reminder of where we started with this project.
The room full of empty tins and dusty baskets was a satisfying project to take on. Very little needed to be done to make it into a functional temporary space in the hotel while we were working on restoration in other parts.

I wish someone had told me earlier to document everything.
When you are doing a big remodel or restoration project it is a great idea to keep detailed records to help track progress and costs. It can also be a resource for the next person coming in after you.
We have come across some surprises while working on this project. Doors covered up. Walls added in where there weren’t any before.
I am starting to keep records. I always like to have appliance model #s to help with troubleshooting and repairs. Some other things I keep track of is paint colors, tile and flooring info, curtains/blinds. Its nice having this information on hand if you need to repair or replace something in your home.

Welcome Rya! I am trying to get more consistent about coming to NOSTR rather that the other places. My life is pretty much consumed by building DIY, and I also love watercolor, crafting, and house plants. This summer I am adding a cut flower garden which will be a new adventure for me.

El Salvador - Part 1
Rides are harder to come by than we expected. We have done lots and lots of walking. It is also hard to find mixed drinks, but beer is available almost everywhere. My favorite drink so far has been blended frozen watermelon.

I can’t live without some of my DIY tools-
I have so many favorites, but my current favorite is my brad nailer! I don;t know how I survived so long without it.
I have used a few different ones and my favorite so far is my Ryobi AirStrike. Its rechargeable and also doesn’t need an air compressor! This makes it really handy for hauling it all over the hotel when I need it for a quick project.

I wish someone had told me earlier that it would be so hard to get our electrical upgrade on the building completed. When we first bought the building we had a big union shop give us a bid on how much it would cost us to do the upgrade. We had the funds to do it, but we really wanted to have a smaller, local business see if they could do the project.
After months of this process dragging on we went to the next electrician, and then the next one. Each one telling us that they would do the project and it wasn’t too much for them to handle.
We are now 2.5 years in to this project and still waiting on our upgrade.
If you asked me what I would do differently it would be, go with the first dang shop that actually sent someone out right away and got a bid turned around quickly. It would have been higher than other options at the time, but now the costs on the project have more than doubled with the way everything is going now.
It did teach us a valuable lesson though. We now get things scheduled as soon as we know we need or want something done, and we also ask other locals or business owners for recommendations. It is so important to figure out who you like to work with and build great working relationships with them.

I wish someone had told me these DIY secrets earlier!

3. Safety first: Always prioritize safety when working on DIY projects. Wear protective gear, use the right tools for the job, and follow proper safety procedures. Your well-being is worth the extra precautions.
4. Embrace imperfections: DIY projects may not always turn out exactly as planned, and that's okay! Embrace the imperfections and view them as unique touches that make your project one-of-a-kind.
5. Measure twice, cut once: Accuracy is key when it comes to DIY projects. Take the time to measure and double-check your measurements before making any cuts. It will save you from costly mistakes and frustration down the road. (not really a secret and for me it usually is double check your math 😆)

This is where my heart is too! I love small local businesses and the benefits this can bring them ❤️ I also talk to friends and family about how holding the US $ for savings is like holding an ice cube and saving it for later, and that there is a better option our there for them.
