Did we provide the correct opportunities to demonstrate the skills we were after? Is the role or our expectations correct? Was there a culture or language barrier? Do we need to arrange an interview with a different interviewer?

- Sometimes people just have bad days for any number of reasons. Always consider giving candidates another try. If a candidate is struggling, seems distressed or distracted ask if they want to reschedule for another day

- Focus on what people know. If you use SQL Server but they only have experience postgres, ask about postgres. Asking about things people don't know about doesn't lead to anything useful
- I don't generally care about specific software / environment knowledge. Most people will be able to pick up a different language/tool/system in a short amount of time. How people solve problems, learn, work as a team, improve systems, collaborate is more important

- Let the candidate know that the process is informal, not an exam, they can take as much time as they like and if anything is unclear that they can ask questions or clarify. Let them know its ok not to know everything.
- The interview is as much for the candidate as you. You need them to judge for themselves if they will be a good fit for the company, team and position

Due to health reasons I didn't make it into the office the other week and had to perform an interview from home (no dedicated room). It is done. My quest to get a scanner to working over iSCSI is complete.
I can now safely claim that Chris on SuperUser is wrong. There is nothing stopping you from having scanners running over a storage network.
