I can tell I'm back in the United States (not in Green Party-run -- for now -- Oslo) because I saw three different cars idling on my block when I walked the dog, and when I took the toddler to the playground an hour later, they were all still there.

Anyone have a list of universities that now ask in faculty hires some version of:
"Have you ever been found responsible for sexual misconduct by a uni or professional association; are you currently under investigation; or have you left a job while under investigation?"
...or any articles about this practice?
I'm asking bc my department is hiring and our university won't let us ask this, and we'd like context as we argue with them about it

Dear grad students:
Possibly the single most useful thing I do for my academic writing is meet regularly w a writing coach.
Normally this looks like me explaining to her why I'm stuck on whatever piece I'm currently stuck on, & what I want it to do that I can't figure out how to do. By explaining it, I pretty much always figure it out.
This is wildly, wildly expensive.
DID YOU KNOW that you can almost certainly do exactly this thing, FOR FREE, at your uni's writing center?

Meetings with student collaborators where you pull up their code and check & debug it together take a lot of time, but they are uniquely satisfying. These are problems that can be solved within the span of a meeting! The student has wrestled with this and failed, and you are the fresh eyes they need! Something will be accomplished!
I'm an inveterate reader of advice columns, always have been, & I think this scratches the same itch: it is really fun to try to solve someone else's problem

My sixth grade teacher read us “The Lottery” is class. It made a huge impression, of course. Do they still do that in middle schools? I feel like that would be dark for today.
(Question inspired by this article. The part about sensitivities today is the least convincing part, drawing on a couple of anecdotes with no attempt to actually consider whether similar things happened previously, with a different topical focus.)

Why has #demography seemingly grown so much?
Lots of journals have had radically escalated submissions as early-career research production has massively intensified and as some journals' author base becomes more international. But it seems like demography has grown disproportionately as a field.
If that's true (is it?), is it because...

#[0] I enjoy many of your posts, but your posts yetserday weren't just testy; they were condescending. And this one is, too. People disagree with you partly because they are coming from a place you seem unwilling to hear: anger at how the legal system works and at it being the major venue available for seeking certain kinds of redress, even though it's extremely ill-suited to that. Lecturing people that "this is how the legal system works" is actually orthogonal to that rage.
