In the evening, my MacBook Pro is my phone, TV, and everything else. It’s the only device I use. Sometimes I want to turn the brightness down even further than the minimum level.
Today I found Lunar, a macOS app that enables exactly that. You press F1/brightness-down past the lowest setting, and rather than the screen turning off, it gets *even darker*. Super slick. I adore this app. https://lunar.fyi

I used the “Curb” taxi app for the first time the other day. It required an account and that account had to be password-based.
My password manager generated a strong password that wasn't accepted by Curb. Fortunately, I remembered that I could contribute to Apple’s “Password Manager Resources” open source project to ensure nobody ever has this problem ever again. https://github.com/apple/password-manager-resources/pull/724/files
So if you ever have a password format compatibility problem, remember that you can contribute, too!

iOS 17.2 Beta 1 includes a lot of polish in Settings > Passwords and important bug fixes for passkeys and the AuthenticationServices framework. Something really cool happened in the last week: the feedback I’ve gotten about passkeys has pivoted from, “Where can I use these?” to, “I really want to use these on the apps and websites adopting them, but I don’t think that they work in my particular setup”, which is outrageous progress.
I’ve helped people, I’ve learned so much, and the engagement is so energizing. As a community, we’r gonna replace passwords as the default credential on the web! :)

@npub1az9…swru Gotcha. Yes, that is a consequence of having multiple password managers enabled. I think the request from people in your shoes is to be able to run like this, but without iCloud Keychain asking to save passwords. So thank you for the feedback!

It’s pretty wild to use a web extension to overwrite browser built-in security-related API, like the WebAuthn API, when a browser and OS distributor has gone out of their way to build an entire API surface for you to plug into.
While this growing pain is figured out, please remember that passkeys are a password replacement, and most people aren't juggling two credential managers around.
Either way, I’ve heard the feedback, but there are others who should hear it, too. :)

iOS has an entire facility for third-party credential managers to plug into to be a data provider for passkeys.
Some third-party credential managers have instead decided to overwrite the JavaScript API in web browsers for passkeys and security keys, making it difficult for users to use the OS functionality, causing user experience havoc.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but passkeys are a *replacement* for passwords — a step up in usability and security over passwords synced in a password manager. Passkeys are not phone-based security keys, or some other easy-to-lose, device-bound credential.
