In Switzerland this is not an option: health insurance is mandatory for everyone and if you don't choose a provider the government will sign you up for a random one and send you the bill anyway. A very different system.

As a default I think syncing makes sense. Most users want the least surprising default. But a choice to not sync for certain relays sounds nice.

The only thing I can see stopping them from doing this is reputation. It's easily trackable so anyone can see if they do this, and it would ruin their entire business. The alternative to trusting the business is to run your own coordinator, but that's even more effort than setting up NIP validated usernames so most people never will unless it's made into a one click process.

We're early enough with Bitcoin that almost everyone will "roll their own" solution at some point. Even the tradeoffs between single sig with shamir vs multisig have no clear winner so it's still very easy to make mistakes.

nostream has low CPU requirements, but uses lots of RAM (>8GB IIRC) for postgres by default. You can tweak it of course but for most VPS providers you'll hit the RAM limit before CPU.

For relays I think bandwidth and raw power is more important than latency. Many relays go down entirely or slow down when hit with large queries. Then latency becomes irrelevant.
