i think i am entering a phase where i am going to have to close down a lot of my internet web services:
matrix
peertube
gemini
openttd etc.
i am going to explore moving into HAM and radio. i will still maintain an internet connection, but only for personal reasons.
like much of the world, we are suffering an economic crisis here in australia. my income is being steadily eaten up by rent and ordinary bills.
my power bill over summer was inexplicably extortionate, i can only assume it is due to the price gouging of the power company. i do not own an air conditioner.
as time goes on, i will not renew my domain names and will let go of my VPS.
please understand while i am going through the process of taking all these things offline.
the people’s permacomputer project will not be affected. i am going to try and maintain work on the permacomputers at great personal cost. if only because selling kits may provide me with some small amount of side income.
the web has failed. if only because these ruling class fuckheads made it completely inaccessible to ordinary people like me to self-host.

HOW TO INSTALL EMACS ON YOUR NINTENDO WII
2019-12-15Why is this an interesting thing to carry out?
the nintendo wii is my favourite video game console, because its hardware design is fascinating, and it is by far one of the easiest consoles to jailbreak and root
also its controllers, with all due respect, were revolutionary, and really made video games more accessible to an enormously broad and diverse audience
the console encouraged innovative human-computer interface metaphors, many of which were completely speculative, experimental, and entirely novel.
it is a fascinating and unique piece of hardware :-)
my main desire for getting linux on this wii was to read emails and listen to internet radio etc on it, and use it primarily as a very low power desktop computer!
so i suppose what i’m carrying out isn’t really an absolute, universal good, for all people - but i am certainly able to now use this device to pirate a great many games, and utilise its exceptional graphics processing performance for things, like watching videos etc etc
but yes! aside from that, there is no real use, apart from practicing software freedom, really!
okay this is what you do to get linux working on your Wii:
download the debian distribution prepared for the Wii here: https://github.com/neagix/wii-linux-ngx
the kernel version is pretty old, it’s 3.15 or some verison of 3.X
but once you do that, make 2 partitions on an SD card:
(1) - FAT16 (for booting the exploit which loads the kernel, basically the hacked bootloader which you got access to once you rooted your console). i’d recommend making this boot partition about 50MiB big
(2) - some ext3 or ext4 partition, of a nice large size - i’d recommend using a 64GiB SD card, because you’ll need a really big swap file for this install
put the bootloader ELF files in the FAT16 partition, and put the linux root filesystem in the ext3/4 partition
slap dat SD card in, and select the kernel image from the BootMii menu you installed when you rooted your console.

this is what your /etc/apt/sources.list file should look like:

this is because Debian has removed support for PowerPC CPUs. you need to get the apt repository that they’ve archived.
but once you’d done that, and you’ve got your networking going, (which most would be able to do because it’s debian), you should be able to:

and then All Should Be Right In The World. with a simple
apt-get install emacs
you should now be able to use emacs on your Nintendo Wii

specifically, fork of cuis smalltalk named haver. this is a project of particular note. i suggest you check it out. it is a formidable adaptation of smalltalk.
the web browser is being called ‘the proclaimer’.
we aim to comment on the social mores of the modern web. it has become a horrible morass of walled gardens and extortionate social relationships.

what is smalltalk? smalltalk is a purely object oriented language. arguably the first complete one, having its syntax written out by alan kay, very famously, on the back of an envelope.
smalltalk-80 is largely the standard today, and opensmalltalk (upon which haver is based) is smalltalk-80 compliant.
what makes smalltalk special? its reflectivity and syntactic power. every operation in the smalltalk virtual machine is based on the concept of sending a message to an object. even the most primitive.

he also linked it in with some strange theodicies. by that i mean he moralised about how the poor are so because of their own vices or ‘lower nature’.
not sure if he was linked with eugenics, but i would not be surprised if eugenicists have historically found malthus quite compelling.

it is an interesting thought experiment–the idea that population growth is arithmetic, whereas resource consumption is geometric–it also happens to be completely false. there is no empirical evidence that population demographics are linked with resource consumption in some ahistorical, simplistic mathematical formula.
and, besides, you cannot approach this problem head on, as if, all else held constant, if you did somehow reduce human population growth, you would solve the climate extinction event we are going through.

@npub1f8u…cgqt hmm. i encounter this objection a lot. hasn’t it been refuted? i.e. evolutionary biology does not admit that humans are innately competitive or cooperative–but the scientific evidence certainly is clear that cooperative social structures are to be preferred evolutionarily.
i.e. it is very widely accepted that species which cooperate through complex social patterns have a strong tendency to better environmental adaptation.
i have looked into this objection. it stems from a misunderstanding about what ‘selection’, and ‘fittest’ means. at its most horrible, it is simply what the arch conservative herbert spencer did to ‘darwinism’–it assumes ‘fittest’ means ‘most successful in competition’.
when in fact darwin never said anything like that at all.

i thought perhaps what i was trying to get across was universal, i.e. outside any particular political creed.
i do not share the view that communism is a kind of tyrrany or despotism. myself, i am certainly committed to the principles of equality, freedom, and democracy.
but i have long left behind what i feel to be the trickery that is private property. i do not think capitalist ‘democracies’ are actually what they claim to be at all.
look at my own country, australia. our masters are the fossil fuel and mining corporations. we recently just had an energy crisis over on the eastern coast because we decided it was somehow more logical to virtually gift all our natural gas resources to multinational corporations. all of it. so much so we had nothing left to generate any power or heating for our own people.

this lesson came to my mind today. i spoke about this with some others.
i remember the story about fidel sending che to once again climb the sierra maestra mountain range with the sick and the wounded after successfully taking control of oriente province of cuba.
at this point fidel would go west, with the rest of the army.

in soderberg’s first movie on che, the lesson is delivered like this: a journalist asks che, after the revolution, a trick question:
“did you feel like you were being demoted or pushed out of fidel’s inner circle? surely you disagreed with this decision.”
che responds very simply:
“no. a revolutionary goes where they are needed.”
a clichéd pop stoicism would agree with che on the grounds that there were things he could, and conversely, not control, and that having a will in accordance with the greater group accords with the nature of a healthy revolutionary organisation.
but i think it means more than this.
further, the meaning behind che’s servitude in following his orders faithfully and dutifully for the collective good of the (ultimately successful) cuban revolution is also deeper than just ‘one should do what is best for everybody’.
i feel this story from the cuban revolution means the following:
have humility. no task for the party is beneath you, and when you are asked to return to an undertaking that seems lower than your station, you must have no resentment or antipathy towards what is required of you.
the result will good. it is not that you are being tested, it is that you are showing you can be trusted, and that your fidelty to the party and the revolution is indeed unbreakable.
