Hello hellebores! Hellebores are some of the earliest flowers to bloom in our garden and they are such a beautiful prelude to the spring flower season. They were some of the first flowers I planted by our front porch and they’ve brightened our mornings every winter with their lovely pink blossoms.
Some folks don’t care for ornamental plants because they don’t serve a practical purpose. For me, beauty serves a great purpose - to awaken something deeper in us. I grow flowers to say thank you to the flowers and to the one who created all this beauty. Every delicate, ephemeral blossom is a reminder of how beautiful life is.

If I had that problem I would celebrate an abundance of elderberries! One person's weed is another person's lover. But to be fair it's a good warning, I love mint, raspberries and other creepers but take in consideration where I plant them. But seriously you must have fertile soil and lots of water... there are worst things in life! 💚🙏🏼

How much rain do you get annually? Depending you may need to offer supplemental irrigation to get good fruit crop. Elders like lots of water as a general rule, but some varieties, at least here on the west coast and the ones that adapted to living in the rain shadow have much more drought tolerance. Depending if you are zone 7, 8 or 9 you'll have the best result if you look for genetics from similar zone and rainfall. Good luck!

we are also in Mediterranean climate usually zone 7b. Elder does very well here, we even have our native blue elder which ranges from Mexico all the way up into Canada. you can definitely grow elder! some varieties may be better suited to your climate but with enough water they should do really well there!

The mainstream wants us divided, it would seem. I want us connected.
It's usually not helpful to push a value (e.g. #leavetheleaves ), I want to step back and see their point of view first, instead of value judging. This neighbor's generosity often makes it easier.

Oh interesting. It's arid here in the summer but wet in winter. I notice mullein comes up in recently burned soil where other weeds wont come up and eroded soil too. Maybe try scratching the soil a little first if its compact. Also cold moist stratification can help. If you don't have a cold winter or if the soil is not moist in winter when it is cold, the seed can take two or more seasons to germinate, while they lay in wait. Good luck with the controlled sowing in pots... that should work, especially if you pre strat in the fridgr! 💚🙏🏼

How does nature store seeds? This was a question I asked when we worked on designing our seed packets. Looking at two examples in the garden - a poppy pod and a tomatillo - I was amazed by nature’s elegant design in form, function, and beauty.

For sure! That what I did with seeds as well to get them established, hold boundaries with grass and have abundant nourishment and medicine available all year round! I share a lot on that in the link in case you're curious to learn more. I really think mullein is everything permaculture folks tout daimon to be for soil building in regions without regular rainfall. 🙏🏼👍🏼💚

Planting trees can be a practice of cultivating faith in humanity.
I will never taste some of the fruits of my labor, such as voluminous production of pecans from the seedlings I planted in the shady understory, or acorns from the oak saplings I hold dear.
On the other hand, the unseeable, unholdable, but very real fruits of my labor are already emotionally and spiritually nourishing my heart as I learn to love us complicated humans (with our flaws).
With that heartset I plant trees in honor of future generations.
Trees, collectively speaking, are living examples of an energetic savings bank we can all contribute to.
Unlike lifeless financial capital, trees offer natural dividends to both future generations and the ecosystem as a whole as a result of actions grounded in multi-generational thinking.
It's not so much about gifting generational natural capital to our offspring or bloodline so that they can have natural wealth after we are gone, its more about gifting love and intention to future generations of all the children of this beautiful Earth...
We Earthlings, we Earth children of all ages, are all of one heart, eating from one tree—The Tree of Life.
